We are thinking of going to Scotland for a week in July / August - possibly on Isle of Mull or near Braemar.
Have been to Scotland before in summer (not camping) and was harassed so much by midges we had to sit inside our cottage in evenings.
Has anyone got any advice / experience on camping in Scotland - are the midges a nightmare or is it bearable ? Any areas of Scotland that are likely to be midge-free in the summer ?

I'm probably not the best person to answer this as the nasty wee beasties don't like the taste of me so i'm never bothered by them!
But my husband is - and I know that further east they're nowhere near as bad as here in the Highlands. We spent a week in Ballater a few years back in the height of midge season and he hardly noticed them. So you may well find Braemar isn't too bad.
All I would say is, come armed with repellants, maybe invest in a midge net if you're really bothered by them. Also, our paper up here has just started a midge watch service this week - there are daily reports in the paper, also on their website www.thisisnorthscotland.co.uk which would be worth checking out (apparently - I can't see it on there but it's definitely in the paper, the Press and Journal if you're up here). The idea is, apparently, to let tourists (and locals) know where to avoid so you can plan your day accordingly!
Avon do a soap called Skin so soft, many caravanners swear by it to repell the midges, infact the forrestry workers on the west coast use it, its' that good.
We went to Braemar a couple of years ago, this was in the height of the midge season. Thankfully, as I am allergic to the nasty little b*****s, there were hardly any there at all. With Mull being on the West Coast, thats quite a different story!!

the skin so soft from avon works for everyone I know. It was the woodland fresh but I think they have recently changed its name although it still works as well (its the greeny coulered one not the red one) My mums been plagued for years, but it works for her, she swears by it now.
