My girlfriend and i wish to go to the Forest of Dean on a camping trip. We bought all the equipment a while back and i've looked on a few sites but i could really do with a few personal recommendations especially as we are new to camping and wish to take it up.
Ideally if someone could give us any ideas on good sites suitable for 28-32 year old camping beginners - being near a pub or somewhere to eat would please my girlfriend in case my outdoor cooking isn't up to standard
Thankyou very much ... Matt

We went to Forest Gate to avoid the crowds.... worth a look? Really beautiful, large garden and the owners run a bed and breakfast in the house and you can book breakfast with them! The breakfast was simply the best breakfast ever ever had at a bed and breakfast..... Strawberries and raspberries. grapefruit freshly sqeezed juices.... and a cooked breakfast to die for.....
Only negative it is by a busy road but we tucked ourselves at the far side of the pitch overlooking the fields and did not impinge at all. Just a thought.

hello...I'm a local so I haven't actually stayed at any of the sites but the christchurch ones seem to get good reviews, the forest of dean council website has a page of sites which is handy...there a some great country pubs around and if you are bringing bikes a pretty good cycle trail, theres a new 'tree top climbing/zip wire thigy' (!) thats looks great too......if I can help with any other info, just shout!
Christchurch is definetely one to go for. Stayed there for 4 days last summer, it ws our first camping holiday. Loved it! Going back at the end of July for a week!

I tried booking into Bracelands/Christchurch (either would have done) for the May bank holiday. I wanted two pitches as friends of ours were coming too. I asked how large the pitches were as we have a large tent (montana 12) and the lady at the other end asked "how many is it for?". So I told her there were four of us in our tent and three in the other one. "No" she said, "how many is the tent for?". On establishing that she meant how many berths, I told her that ours was a 12 man tent (but only 4 of us in it) and my friends was a 6 man tent. I was then told that they don't take tents for more than 6 people. I further explained that our tent is 7m x 4m and my friends is 6.5m x 4m, so hardly any difference in the size, just extra bedrooms in the one . She would accept the booking for the 6 man tent, but not the 12.!!
I argued for a little while longer and then totally gave up. Has anyone else experienced this?
I've been to Bracelands and loved it. It has a really happy feel about the place. Nothing is marked out or too neat! Most pitches are sloping but its a very peaceful sort of place even if your neighbours are noisy!
Can't comment on pubs etc. We were just content to sit outside the tent of an evening!
