Hello there

Does anyone know of a good campsite near Symonds Yat?  I've come across two so far - Symonds Yat Caravan & Camping Park, and Dowards.  A review on the former says that there was music coming from the adjacent amusement park during the day, which is a bit worrying though the site looks lovely.  It might not be too big a problem if it stopped for the evening as we would be out for most of the day.  I can't find any reviews on Doward.

If anyone has any comments on either of these two sites I would be grateful, or suggestions as to where else we could stay.  We are a small group of a few families (quiet & well-behaved!) who intend to do some river trips in our canoes.

Cheers,  LIZ x

I'd heartily recommend Lucksall Campsite on the banks of the river Wye at Mordiford near Hereford .  It's about a 20 minute drive to Symonds yat, or you could canoe down over several days.  Mordiford to Hoarwithy is 8 miles, Hoarwithy to Ross-on-Wye is 8 miles, Ross to Kerne Bridge is 6 miles, and Kerne to Symonds Yat is 9.

There's a min.fac camp-site on the river bank at Hoarwithy - Tressack Farm

You couldn't go far wrong with the Bracelands campsites at Christchurch in the Forest of Dean and extremely handy for Symonds Yat.

Agree about Bracelands.

It's a nice walk (quite long) along the river or you can go though the forest to Symons Yat.  Pub by the river before going up the steps is well recommended for Sunday lunch, bit pricey around £10/head but good grub!

ive not stayed at the site at symonds yat but it does look lovely and its not right on the amusements but its right on the edge of the rivver the boats take trippers from one point to the other and to the other side where the pub is,  canoes up and down on teaching classes and a beautiful little church tucked in the corner beautiful

Liz

Ive somehow got myself roped in to a Camping and Canoeing weekend which starts and ends at Symonds yat caravaning and camping park, god knows how it happened as im the wrong shape and size for a canoe, anyway, ive been to the symonds yat site before and we had a great time, can highly recommend the ''Wye Knot" pub just up the hill for a great meal, gets very busy in there so its sometimes best to book, the prices are very reasonable too. Ill be going next weekend so providing i survive the white water rapids, crocodiles and the weather, ill let you know about the noise from the fair.

Hi

Doward Park is the best campsite in Britain I think - and we must have been to over 50!!

I put a rave review on here about it (has it gone?!) - it's got a brill website with reviews - it is tents and motorhomes only and it's great.  Go for the walks through the woods to the river and get the hand ferry to the pub - you will love it!

Must have been a while ago.. I don't think the hand ferry is still operating.. the 'Ferry Inn' is now closed, although I've got a feeling the 'Saracens Head' operate a ferry at peak times.. whenever they are..  Its quite a long walk to the Saracens from the Doward.. and a steep walk back to the campsite.

The area is lovely though.. always nice coming home to whenever we've been away.

Both the hand ferries are still working and operate when the pubs are open, which at the moment is all day, The Ferrie Inn now has has new owners and is up and running. The walk to the pubs is about a mile through the woods or via the little lanes over the Doward.
