My friends booked a pitch for us next weekend and I then, after reading some comments on here, I asked him to let the owner know that we had a 'large' tent (ours has 3 pods and a centre area). He phoned and told the owners (on Tuesday) and they called him today (Friday) and told him that the tent was too big for their normal pitches and that he 'might' be able to find us space in a field near the site (no electric)!

We've had to find another site, which thanks to UKCS we've been able to get a pitch (in the site down the road from original site) that will accommodate our tent.

Should you, on booking, be asked how big your tent is? It would save a lot of messing about. If we hadn't thought to let them know, we'd have got there and not been able to pitch our tent!

Some sites do ask how big your tent is.

I always make a point of telling them the size of our tent when booking as I've almost ended up with a similar problem as you.

Some sites seem to treat you as some sort of leper if you have a large tent but don't seem to bothered about the size of tin tents, some of the 2 axled Caravans and awnings you see, you'd think the circus had just arrived.

We also make a point of telling the site the footprint of our tent since we got the Hartford. It's better to be safe than sorry I feel. Wouldn't want to get to a site and find we wont fit.

In future I'll make it a point of enquiring about pitch sizes first. And mentioning the UKCS as usual.

the summer before last we had booked to go to a Shorefield site down nr Bournemouth.... when we booked we had our Sunncamp profile XL + Gazebo... no questions were asked of its size...lovely :O),,,few weeks after we changed tents to a Gelert lokon Vario 6... me as a worrier rang Shorefield to check it was OK with size etc... i gave her the exact measurement...i also said there will be a gazebo too... the measurements being ??? whatever it was... And they said sorry we wont be able to accomodate you :O(

the difference with caravans/awning and tents..is a caravan and awning doesn't have big sprawling lines etc... and a caravan and awning would actually take up less space... than a tent... please dont shout at me... its right though...

If it matters on a pitch size then yes you should be asked. We have been on sites in the past when large tents have spilled over on to our pitch and caused a problem. When we mentioned to the site owner they just pleaded ignorance. I personally think all sites should have marked pitches and they should be suitable for all sizes of tents, caravans.

The thing that concerns me in this sorry tale is the fact it took 3 days for the site to say "no can do", especially if your friend spoke to someone. E-mail and electronic communication's a different beast - servers can go down, internet connections fail etc, computers be sick..; but surely if speaking to someone an answer should be forthcoming, if not straightaway, within an hour or so? Did you ask for hook-up right from the off - not everywhere has it available on every pitch?

In my opinion, both campers (in the widest sense, so including caravanners etc) and owners should share the "duty of care" inherent in booking and making sure that all parties involved know of (changes to) pertinent details for holidays.

Glad you managed to find somewhere else though - in a few weeks time when the children are off school you might not be so lucky :( .
