We will be leaving Friday night to travel to Modbury in South Devon. We usually leave about midnight with just a couple of short stops enroute. Thinking about getting one of those pop up tents and leaving a little earlier on the Friday and trying to find a camp site half way then setting off again on Saturday morning. We are told not to arrive at site till about 1pm so would you think it would make sense to break the journey or just bite the bullet and get there for about 8am.

Dont know if breaking the journey would cause more hassle, bearing in mind we will be travelling from Northumberland.

Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!

If it was me travelling that far I would travel through the night, we've talked about overnight stops but think it would be too much hassle having to unpack the car and repack the car, and for us it would only cause arguments and bad feeling travelling the second leg of the journey.  Remember it doesn't always fit back in the way you want it to.

I can see the up side to it though, it wouldn't spoil your first day there because you'd of had a good night's sleep beforehand.

Hope you have a good holiday whatever you decide to do.

If you're told to be there from 1, there may be an underlying reason - the pitch may be booked for the previous night. What sort of time are you thinking of "getting up" on the Friday evening - if this is not too late it may be worth giving the site a ring to see if this is the case. If you arrive at 8am, would you be prepared to leave at 7am or so, so that others who have a similar idea can also be accomodated? Having said that, there may be a place on site where you can leave the car (or van, if you're towing) and just look around the local area or similar.

I appreciate you're probably wanting to beat the traffic - may be worth finding a Travelodge or similar if you don't want the hassle of a pop-up tent. In my opinion, it's better to be safe than sorry - seems to be pushing it a bit to do 400 miles in 8 hours, especially at night.
