Am looking for sites that are suitable for single parents (kids 7,5,3)
Ideally within 2 hours of Cambridge, more for long weekends.

Any recommendations would be much appreciated.

Hi and welcome to UKCS.

I am just wondering what you need in a site to make it suitable for single parents? I camp alone with my children but have never had any problems on any sites.

I'd rather be camping

Ditto here! I have taken our four kids away on my own since the youngest was 2. I probably have a preference for the quieter, smaller sites so it's easier to keep tabs on where they all are!

Only other tip would be to take a porta-potti (or similar). That's the one time when at a moments notice you are expected to be in several places at the same time! - i.e. with toddler at loo, with rest of kids at playground, etc! Also, if you need the loo in the night you don't need to worry about any of the kids waking and finding you gone.

Surely a family site, is a family site! Apparantly a family can be with same sex partners, so it can definately be with one parent! Or am I missing something?

depends what you want really, like everyone else has said all family sites cater for single parents, I'm not single but I go camping with just the kids all the time (not as often as I want of course), Did you want somewhere where someone might give you a hand setting up? If that's the case try one of the meets this is going to be a good one, it's about 2 hours away too.  You dont have to join in with everyone else if you don't want to (but it is fun).

Welcome to UKCS!!!

Ok, I think I may know what Bikeropus is getting at...

The things that make it easier for any parents, but especially single ones, are being able to pitch within view of the (well equipped) play area, having a tap nearby, not being too far from the loos, and, family bathrooms that are big enough for the family!

I'm sorry I can't help with sites that are within two hours of Cambridge, but I hope I've made it a bit clearer about what's needed.

HI, and welcome to UKCS - but beware this site is very addictive.

I've often camped without OH and find that all the sites I've been have been fine.
The one advantage I have found on the big commercial site such as Haven, is that I can go for a drink as the clubs are definately family orientated, no one looks twice if you are there solo with the kids or have your partner with you.  Also no questions as to whether children are really welcome - we've all been to "family" pubs only to find that children are not really appreciated.  OK I may only have a coke or half a bitter, but the children's shows are great for little ones, and I don't have to worry about keeping an eye on them.

Definately agree with B Chrystie on the porta potti - having a child wake up when I was either on a loo trip for myself of with the other child, and coming to look for me worried me - so I invested in a porta potti.   Also ideal for those occasions when you've just taken one to the loo, and the other one didn't need to go - until you get back to the tent, only to have them say that they are "Desperate".

I often go with my two alone, and would definitely agree with this!  Money well spent

Many thanks for all your replies

Suzy(Volupturaptor) hit the nail on the head.

I think I have been worrying for nothing, It is just that many a time one pair of eyes does not seem enough. Yes I already have a Porta-Potti Felt that this was a definite requirement especially for those night time trips.

Just overly concerned about sites that are near water. Basically just worried about taking that leap of faith and going Solo (have only been with G-Parents so far)

Why not take away some of the 'fear of the unknown' by going to a campsite that you have already visited and so already know whether it is suitable or not.
