What happened to the good old days when you could decide on a Wednesday night that you fancied a weekend away and just booked. I understand we are now getting peak season but i have tried around half a dozen sites in the locality and everywhere is fully booked. I dont like having to work out weeks in advance when i want to go away on the spur of the moment.

My favourite local siteTrentham, has been totally ruined by members of this site  . A number of you stayed there a couple of weekends ago on a rally and have given such rave reports that it is now full for the weekend. I think i may buy a piece of land and build my own site if its that lucrative now

How does everyone else manage or does nobody do things on a whim these days lol...............

I think with todays way of life (and in no way am I suggesting that you are old!!!) No-one can do things without planning. Personally I've got 2 daughters and 2 dogs as well as the OH and he works shifts!! Can't do anything without running it past them ALL first (not the dogs).

It's a sorry state of affairs.

I agree it is a shame that we can't seem to go anywhere on spec anymore, we book most of our sites well in advance so that we are not dissapointed and we can choose the sites we want to go to. I think if you can go mid week it's not so bad but yes it would be nice to say, "it's a lovely weekend lets go away." |I am sure there is a need for more good sites.

Not over old, in mid 40's . My problem is both daughters play sports often at short notice and as the experience is valuable they get preference.

When we had a van last, 10 years ago, we could pretty much book at the last minute and find somewhere. I guess as you say things have moved on and caravaning/ camping is a lot more popular.

Have got my diary out and am looking for our next free date and booking...........

Hi we usually decide at the last minute to go.

Yesterday we got the URGE so I looked on the campsite search on hear phoned 2 up and got us booked in for this week-end at Ripley caravan park near Harrogate.

Must admit we did risk it a bit last August bank holiday, we (I)decided on the saturday to pack the car up and go to the Lake District (we had actually forgot it was a bank holiday. we where supprised to get in at the first site we called at. must admit though I did get worried when I realised it was a bank holiday and had resigned my self to the fact we would be sleeping in the car.

I personally think going on the spur of the moment adds to the fun of camping.(don't know if the other half agrees though)

Yes when we were kids and went camping with my Mum and Dad we used to just go somewhere and hope for the best.  We are going away for a week at the end of August and another family member wants to come and stay with us for the last few days but they can't because the site only takes Saturday to Saturday booking. It does get a bit annoying doesn't it.

welcome Yas. Depends on the site. Some let you pay an extra deposit refundable if no problems. Use the search engine on here to find details on sites then contact the site you want to go to or look on web sites. A lot mention whethere age or single sex party restrictions.

If you want to make a post to ask a question just start a new topic. You will get people to answer your questions as they will see the main heading. Good luck........

I know what you mean, when it was just the two of us (13+ years ago) we used to see what the weather was like on the Friday lunchtime, if it looked good we'd have a quick chat about it on the phone, hubby finished work before me and would have the gear ready to chuck in the boot when I got home.  I changed my clothes, had a sandwich, and we were off for the weekend!

Didn't have a mobile phone in those days so we just turned up and sites and hoped there was space.  Never got turned away, as I recall.

Ah, those were the days .......
