You could try the Isle of Mull. Get the ferry from Oban to Craignure. The whale watching boats go from Tobermorry so if you can get a direct crossing it would save taking the car over to Mull. If you like wildlife it is also worth booking a tour in Mull with Wildlife Expeditions, very good chance of seeing Eagles and otter with David Woodhouse.
Hello Roy we went on the Whale watching trip last year from 'Balamory' and it was great trip. Didnt see any Whales, but saw Basking shark, Dolphins, Porpoise, Sun fish (quite rare) lots of seals and a Hurry of Gannets which was quite spectacular. We stayed at the Caravan Club site in Oban and caught the early morning ferry over from Oban to Mull, then on to the bus up to Tobermory. We went with Wildlife Expeditions and they were fantastic. The site at Oban is beautiful and right on the beach with the most fantastic sunsets I have seen.

we have just returned from Isle of Mull, lovely site called Shieling Holidays, we return every year and it is by far the most beautiful and magical place in the world ( our opinion) saw whales, dolphins, sea-eagles from the RSPB hind alongside Loch Frisa, those who watch springwatch will know that the sea-eagle has another 2 chicks and we were lucky enough to view mum and chicks from the hind.Fancy a special evening out on Mull, book a table in advance of your holiday at the Highland Cottage situated above the town of Tobermory, food fab and well worth the money.
Depending on the size of your outfit, just to give you some idea we stayed for 8 nights and our outfit length was classed as a commercial vehicle, the ferry with caladonian macbrayne was £150 return, the crossing takes 45 mins and the site on Mull is only yards from the ferry at Craignure, also the good thing about this site is that you can reserve your plot, we chose 13 which had fantastic view over Sound of Mull, also within walking distance of the site are various attractions such as stately homes, Duart castle, bird of prey centre and a good pub called the Craignure Inn. Good luck.
If you want to go to Orkney try Pentland Ferries £12 per adult £26 for car £26 for caravan ( any size) each way. Booking essential, book by phone, pay on the boat.
Have just posted a review on the site in Kirkwall.

Hi Roy
Afraid I am pretty computer illiterate so can't do links!!
If you go to campsite search and put in Pickaquoy as the name of the site you can read my review.
There is also a smaller site at Stromness. Similar toilet facilities but less of them. Lovely views there but quite exposed.
PS if you want to go to Skye there is now a FREE bridge at Kyle of Lochalsh.
I'm from Scotland and have been round the coast many times but have yet to see any big whales although I've seen porpoises/dolphins from the ferries a few times - including the Orkney ferry last year.
We used the Pickaquoy site in Orkney and it's pretty good and well located close to the centre of Kirkwall.

Pleased to find someone else who like Mull. We went for the day three years ago and went out with David Woodhouse. Ended up taking the car back over the next day. We were on our way to Skye at the time. We then spent a week there the following year and a week last Christmas. We are going back for a week this Christmas, not in the TT. Is your outfit a tent or caravan? We want to take the TT summer of 2007 but as the weather has always been damp and chilly not too sure, so we are wondering how you got on, with that aspect of a trip. We love Mull and think it would be great to camp so long as we can be warm and dry, not that the TT leaks but getting clothes dry after a day out???
