I hope that you may be able to help me here. On a day out, I drove through Ambleside ( we came through the Kirkstone Pass !!!! and headed back toward Keswick) and on the way out of the town, noticed a few camp sites.
Ideally, I would like recommendations of what you consider to be the best site nearest Ambleside.

Unfortunatley none of those listed are within 15 min walk of Ambleside. The nearest is Skelwith fold but that is still a good 30min walk via Clappersgate, then along the main road. From your description it doesn't look like the sites you saw are listed on here.

As far as I know-(don't mind being corrected) there are no sites that near to Ambleside!! If you were heading to Keswick on the A591 (past Rydal water & Grasmere) I don't think there are any sites nearby. It is possible, depending on when you were there, that you saw a rally going on .
For what it's worth, the N.T. site at Great Langdale is about 15 mins drive from Ambleside & is among the best situated sites in the Lakes, 3 pubs nearby & endless walks direct from site!!
hi there, there are two excellent sites that will not be hard to beat, the first one you come across is called brotherswater camping park which is on the A592 Windermere to Ullswater road which is the same road that kirkstone pass is on please take care on this road as it is very narrow and hilly but the veiws are out of this world,as for the campsite "excellent" with its own pub and lake. The other campsite you may consider is at the foot of ullswater lake this site is called parkfoot caravan and camping park follow the A592 untill you come to pooley bridge you will soon be there, this is also a excellent site please try you wont be dissapointed hope this will help you clare
You know, I saw a couple of sites, but I guess that as i was concentrating on driving I probably would have been at least 15 minutes driving time out of Ambleside, so cheers Bernard, I think I will give the Great Langdale site a try.
Also Clare, many thanx for the Park Foot advice. I have stayed there before and enjoyed it.
