i am interested to hear if anyone else has ever had experience of a campsite that doesn't allow a small van on their site. I have just spoken to Lee Valley campsite to enquire about vacancies and was told that they don't accept commercial vehicles. I explained that my partner has a small van, it is NOT used for any business, but was purchased especially for the use of carrying camping equipment. Not that we have a lot but my car is very small and not really suitable. I was told that under no circumstances are vans OF ANY KIND allowed. I said that we have never had a problem before to which she replied ' i think you will find that a lot of campsites will refuse.' Is this true? and we have just been lucky in the past?.... If so, this is very restricting and to my mind quite sensless. As you can tell i am not pleased about this as we chose the site to be able to visit relatives. Does anyone know of a site that is within easy travelling distance to the center of London ? ....PLEASE.. one that doesn't have stupid rules....... I would appreciate any suggestions...thanx....maggie

We have just spent a fantastic week at Pear Tree Park in Dorset. A young couple next to us had a small, but I have to say quite smart Renault van; so it looks like they arent that fussy.

Hi I've also come across a site that has the rule no commercial vehicles.  We were told this last year so we chose another site as we were going with friends who had a "white van".  This weekend we visited site ourselves and a sign at reception "No Commercial Vehicles". By the time Friday evening arrived it was full of vans various colours, trades also Jet skies large and motorised dingies.

I have come across quite a few sites that state quite categorically that no commercial vehiscles are allowed, presumably to stop new age travellers or similar without being acused of being prejudiced. I am quite happy about this, I don't fancy pitching next to some stinking white van with diesel fumes every time they drive off in the morning.(Although I am sure that doesn't apply to you!) Perhaps you could arrange to drop everythng off at your pitch then leave your van in the camp car park?

We have a VW transporter which we bought for purpose of being able to use for cmping as well as business. We haven't come across any problems yet, pulled up to Mortonhall, Edinburgh in it and went in to reception to book in and saw their no commercial vehicle sign and thoght 'oh dear here we go' but they never said a word and when we got to our pitch we noticed quite a few vans on site. So don't know how strictly the rule is applied even in those that have the rule.

Hi

We have a Toyota Hiace bought specifically for lugging all our stuff around - it has been fitted with extra seats for the children and is our only vehicle.  We've stayed at numerous sites and never had a second look - yet!  But it's a really good point to consider which we hadn't thought of and sorry about the stinky fumes...never thought of that either

thanx everyone for your replies and your suggestions.....suppose that's what you get from a large commercial site like Lee Valley.....we are used to more friendly family run sites i suppose where everyone is welcome and the only rules are that you have fun enjoy your stay and don't bother fellow campers with noise or anti-social  behaviour....... oh well....will continue the search for another site that is within easy reach of london to visit relatives...happy camping.....maggie

Hi ,

I have a VW Transporter and I show dogs so I need the space to fit everything in , I  use it for private use and I too have been a little concerned about No Commercial Vehicles on Sites .

I posted this Topic a few months ago and had a reply from a site owner that they state No Commercial Vehicles but would be happy to put me up,  I must mentioned  that I have a Van and use it for pleasure and not trading purposes and they stated that many sites would let you on site if you explain this but some do not.

I now phone around first before booking to check wether it is ok , I have been told that some people trade when Camping with Vans and also they stay longer on site then they should.

Aly

I'v been to quite a few sites that state no vans or Hobby caravans, and lots more who don't allow tents which makes it difficult for us as my brother has a tent and often likes to come away with us. Whats happening ?  is camping becoming so popular that site owner can afford to be really choosy ?    Rosie
