Hi Folks,

Have any of you been camping to Anglesey at all? Just booked for the Ad astra caravan park for 5 nights in Aug, but no updated reviews. Would appreciate any advice on places to visit etc especially if the weather is bad!! (We have 2 children aged 6 and 2 1/2 ).

Thanks in anticipation

Caroline

Not been to Ad Astra, but we were in Anglesey last weekend.  We stay at Tyddyn Isaf near Moelfre which is lovely.

The Sea Zoo is ok for a day out and if you are down that way then Foel Farm is nice - there is an indoor feeding barn, tractor rides, small cafe, more than enough to fill a long morning.  Also near there is PLas Newydd - a National trust house on the Menai Straits which has a great adventure playground in the woods, I don't think you have to pay to park either.

Henblas is an adventure type place combined with a farm too, I seem to think it has indoor stuff.

Pili Palas (a butterfly house) is good, the butterflies will come and land on you, there is a small park outside and picnic benches for lunch.

Hope that helps, if I think of anywhere else I'll post!

When we stayed in Trearddur we parked at Holyhead and went over to Dublin for the day.  It was only £30 for 2 adults and 3 children and that was 5 years ago.  It was a great day out.  There's also RAF Valley where you can watch the fighter planes coming in and going out.  Beaumauris is nice, it has a castle and an old courthouse there.  Henblas is also really good.  When we got there we thought there would never be enough for us to do all day but there was.  They have Kestrel displays, sheep shearing and tractor rides amongst other things.

I hope this information is still up to date as it is a few years since we went.  It's a lovely place, I hope you get the weather.

Julie

Not been to Ad Astra...but went to Fron Camping and Caravan site two weeks ago (review sent.)

There are lots of things to do, as Julie has already said. Even if the weather is not as good as you hoped the beaches are still great for exploring. We went crab fishing whilst we were there...£1.99 crab lines = hours of fun. Newbourgh Beach is well worth the £2.00 parking fee..woods to explore and dunes to play in.

Stayed at Kingsbridge Campsite near Beaumaris in May and have just booked again at same place for August Bank Hols.  Had not been to Anglesey since I was a kid.  As I have a three year old daughter and we were worried about the unstable weather, I bought the book "The Rough Guide to Wales".  It cost £10.99 and is brilliant. It even includes street maps of some of the towns. (Have since bought "The Rough Guide to Cornwall" for recent stay at Gwithan Farm near Hayle).

The book has LOADS of info about Anglesey, as well as the rest of Wales.  It gives info on all the places to visit, the opening times and if there is a cost, it warns you in advance. It also gives details of places to eat (including how much you can expect to spend on the meal), as well of loads of other top tips.

Best time we spent was searching the rock pools at Benllech, that was free!!  There is a little cafe on the front that does good food too.

Hope you have a good time.

Pauline

Dont do it!

I did it once in 1968, and Im still traumatised. The wind was driving, the rain torential. So bad that the rain came down horizontally there! Even the sheep were complaining.

And you cant even get a good radio signal while you are in your car huddled around the glowing cigar lighter for warmth,.... in August.

All we could get was Radio Caroline, which played "I got you babe" every five minutes.....aaaarrrgghhhhhh.....tremble....gibber..gibber.

the only place that looked worth visiting was Amlwch. And that was because we found a good chippy.

For the true Anglesey experience just stay at home, fill the bath, climb in it fully clothed... and hey! you are there!

we are going to anglesey on the 21st July for the Viking Festival at amlwch (i think thats how it is spelt).  We went end of may bank holiday and yes it rained sideways on saturday but by 2.00 we where sat on the beach.

A little tip if you are going to Anglesey, when you get up in the morning and its raining just go to the other side of the island it will probably be cracking the flags.

We play a game when we go to the car boot at mona, everyone gets a pound and the winner is the person that finds the most useless piece of erm........tat, and the winner gets to keep all the items bought loads of fun for the kids.

Most importantly have fun it is a beautiful place.

Cable Bay, near Rhosneigr, is a nice beach to visit and you can walk to the burial mound along the clifftops; see here.

Plas Newydd and Portmeirion are good places to visit when the weather is not being friendly. You have to leave Anglesey for Portmeirion but it is not too far a drive.

I realise your kids are still very young, but all three places are good for a day out and especially if you take a picnic; the beach at Cable bay is lovely, the gardens at Plas Newydd are great for kids to run around whilst you relax and Portmeirion is unusual and very colourful.

Hope the sun shines on you! Have fun!

Another place that you can go, if you're willing to go off the island, is the Greenwood Centre over at Caernarfon. It's a great place for a day out - take a picnic! Ride on the only man powered roller coaster in the UK!

We love it there - have taken the kids a couple of times now.

Called at Ad Astra weekend before last to get details for friends - looked OK. Big camping ground to your right as you go in, with vans on another area. Probably within walking distance of the California pub/restaurant, but not sure if there's a pavement, so might be a tad dangerous with littlies.
