Just stayed in a  'Caravan & camping club' site called Riverside in Plymouth. The site was lovely to look at, the toilet block was shocking!! The bins were never emptied for the 4 days we we there and the park wardens were so rude!! They would neither aknowledge you when you said hello or help you if you needed any. A few other people we spoke to had the same thing and some had it even worse. Surely there must be a lifeguard on at the pool area but there was none. Maybe I expect too much when I stay on site but this was ridiculus.

Will be glad when we open our own site, at least we will be friendly!!

Doesn't the Club have a complaints procedure?  I suppose you didn't complain whilst there as they were so unhelpful.  I wouldn't expect this as a member of the CC and would complain.

Are you sure it was a C&CC site, I didn't think there was a club site in Plymouth?

I would certainly have complained about the bins and cleanliness. As to the life guard at the pool we've stayed at sites ( not C&CC sites)  that don't provide a lifeguard and make it very clear you use the pool at your own risk.

Certainly if i was that unhappy about something I would complain, after all you are paying to use the facilities, which are presumably advertised as been well kept / clean etc.

Hi,

There isn't a club site in Plymouth - I just did a quick search, was it the Riverside Caravan Park?  http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=1413  It seems to get good reviews, so what a shame you had a bad time there.

I have had that before at a campsite.  It is not nice, if you can not get satisfaction while on site then take names and follow it up in writing to the manager/owner.  We pay good money for vcamping now and it is only reasonable to expect some sort of standard.

We have sited our van at Holmanswood in Devon, we had fantastic service there this weekend as it was our first time away in the van.  We had one of the assistant wardens parked opposite us and they were so helpful, we only had to ask and they knew the answers straight off.  The owners were lovely, asking us if we were ok, had any problems etc etc - so I can vouch for the fact there are decent sites out there.

Oh, and the loos, as ever, were spotless.  You could smell the bleach in there good and strong and they actually shut them for 2 hours to do a thorough job.  They are a C and CC site I believe.

it was def a C & cc site, there was a sign on the front of the shop. we have written to the managers as there were a few ppl who had the same treatment as us (some even worse) not sure if i will get a response, but have asked them to reply in 14 days. It was such a shame as the site is beautiful.

If the site was a Club one, it would be on their website - please have a look. The sign may have said it was a 'Listed site' with the club sign, this means it is in their 'Big Book of Sites'.  Was it the site in the link I posted?

Still, surely it is all valuable research in how to run your own site?!

Accreditation or listing signs are quite normal.  For instance an hotel may have an AA star sign outdoors - which doesn't mean it is owned/run by the AA! nor is it false advertising.

I can understand if you have never stayed on a CC&C site, that you wouldn't recognise their style - but they do all have very obvious appearance including signage, logo'd uniforms, booking in and arrival procedures, site rules, cleaning routines etc,.  Once you've tried one, it would be unmistakeable in future.

C&CC sites also don't have Wardens - They have Site Managers

Hmph!.  Well it WAS misleading, because the original poster was misled into thinking it was a C & CC site.  Which was probably the intention - why else use the Club's logo?  The Big Sites Book is just a listing of sites.  It says that it does not imply an endorsement or recommendation.  Sites are "inspected" at least once every two years, but only to see that they do actually have the facilities they advertise, not to check on the quality of them or of the site's management.  So the fact that a site is "listed" means about as much as the fact that it's listed in the phone book.  So why does the C & CC let these sites use and display the Club's logo?   Especially as non-members don't know this, and are likel to interpret the logo as meaning that it's a Club site.  And why would a site use the logo, if not to mislead its punters into thinking that it has some kind of associaion or affiliation or approval of the Club?  Seems to me that the C & CC should either apply a quality criteria and carry out adequate inspection, or else stop allowing unassociated sites from using its logo onsite or in their advertising.

Looking through "The Big Sites Book", it mentions that listed sites are visited every other year to ensure that facilities are satisfactory and correctly listed, and can quite easily not be accepted from re-entering the book if thought appropriate. I've been told from owners (wardens, call them what you will) that the CCC do act on complaints if considered appropriate. And of course things may have changed since the book went to press (the current BSB is now effectively 2 years old), new owners, new ethoses etc. - one of the advantages of the fluid medium of the web...
