We usually go camping to Limefitt near Ambleside. We love it. We have exhausted a lot of the walking in the immediate area and fancied camping in the Keswick area to do some of the walks in that part of the lakes. I have seen a couple of nice sites mentioned, but when I contacted them they told me they dont take bookings for tents. This isnt really much of a help to us. We only have limited holidays off work and travel from Derbyshire and need to know we have a pitch available when we arrive. Can anyone recommend any sites in the Keswick area to try.

If you can get booked, I would recommend the Camping & Caravanning Club Keswick site.  Most of the other sites around Keswick tend to have too many tents during the peak periods, resulting in overlapping guylines etc.

Hi freddie,

we asked in another section if anyone had been to Limefitt and if so what was it like, could you help us? We just want to know your impressions of the site, the facilities etc and is it a good site as there is only 1 review of it.

Thanks for any help

Sorry Freddie,

forgot to say we have been trying Keswick area for a while now and none that we have contacted actually take bookings. Most are turn up on the day. The C&CC club do take bookings but get booked very quickly. Castlerigg Hall looks a good site as we checked it out and I have found out that even when the sign says it is full, if you actually have a look round and find a pitch without being too close to your neighbours they will probably let you on. I know it is better to have a definite pitch organised, but most of them in that area will only give confirmed bookings to caravans.

Hi Beezers, We have been camping at Limefitt for about three years now. Its a great site, really handy for Windermere and Ambleside, there is actually a really nice walk from the campsite over to Ambleside. Showers are always really clean and hot, most of the pitches are level, I think there are two which arent, the first year we went we ended up on a sloping pitch, after one night we asked to move, and were allowed to move to a super serviced pitch at no extra cost. If I had to give any criticisms, the only things I would say are that the shop isnt always open at the hours it advertises, quite often you can go and there will be a notice on the door saying back in 30 mins etc. And the Badger, There us a Badger who lives somewhere in the area and he visits the site at night. The first year we went we stupidly left a bin bag in the porch of our tent with some biscuit wrappers in, he sniffed them out and squeezed underneath the tent and came in the porch. Dont worry its not as bad as it sounds, he's scared of you so once you make a bit of noise and shoo him off he runs away. But he can be heard most nights at about 3 O'Clock doing his rounds and sniffing round the tents. We have seen him wandering around if we have got up in the night to go to the loo. We have grown to like him, and get quite dissapointed now if we dont see him. He was definately still there in July this year though. So dont worry, just dont leave and food in bin bags in your tent or anything like that and he wont give you any trouble. Great site though, you will have a really good time.

Hi freddy119, I stayed at the castleriggs farm campsite in may and can say i'll be back again. Its smaller than the nieghbouring castleriggs site but thats what I like, I don't know if they take bookings but if you go the most level pitches are at the top of the field.

We are going to Castle Rigg Hall end of September in one of their caravans. There are walks from the site and by going down into Keswick.

Whatever site you pick in Keswick you will be able to leave the car behind.

A lovely walk is up Latrigg Fell at the back of Keswick - magnificent views.

Castlerigg Hall site has a campers kitchen as well as very nice showers and loos and even a bathroom. They have a good website as well
