I have been trying to find a site in the lakes which stakes bookings, but so far they are all first come first served! Any suggestions?

Try the Croft at Hawkshead. I know you have to book as we couldn't get a pitch a few weeks ago.

Have you tried Park Coppice on Lake Coniston?  We have just booked this a few weeks ago and availability was good then.  Look in Camp Site search, all the reviews are excellent for this park.
