There are quite a few sites open 'off season'. I'm not sure about the main Camping and Caravanning Club sites, but many of the smaller 'CL'  sites are open all year.

I too would go camping at any time but SWMBO is not so keen. She did suggest today though that October might be an option so I may be making progress

it get quite cold but it is great!

the sites are usually very quite maybe just you in a field all to yourself, no cues for the showers.

my tip were wooley hats in bed as this is were you loose most heat and sleep in single sleeping bags don't zip them together.

get camping beds or mat(tress) to keep you inuslated from the ground

Take 4 pairs of socks for every day you stay away. (i just always seem to get them wet or need to wear 2 at once.

eat in the nearest pub.

you can pick up a booklet of all the camping sites in the lakes from any of the tourist infomation centers in the area, they will propably post you one as well.

Smaller tents are better in cold conditions ,less space for you to heat up ,are you planning on taking heating ? gas or electric ?

Are you prepared for just how cold it can be ? whens the ealiest /latest you have camped so far ?

We have camped in below freezing condtitions and that was only autumn ,hypermia is a real risk ,so make sure you are well equipt!

electric hook up a halogen heater are great, used them myself when snowing out side. doesn't as much heat the tent but keeps you sngug when sat in front of it, and gived of quite a bit of light too. Safer than gas as they switch off should they get knocked over.  Can also take electric lamps as there will be less daylight during winter too.

we camp all year round but in a camper van. the caravan club have quite a few open all year but don't cater for tents, ( apart from the odd few sites). camping and caravan club have very few year round sites, but there are some, Also some of the 5 van sites are all year round. Some people prefare winter camping, less people around, although the limited daylight can be a problem if walking in the fells. Coldest we had was -1'C in the van overnight, with ice on the inside of the windscreen. We were quite snug though but did have hookup and a fan heater. also some sites may not show as year round as they close after new year but are open til then.

Hi

We camp in the motorhome all year round - wouldn't fancy a tent!  However, at the Brotherswater Inn, funnily enough at Brotherswater they have a campsite behind the pub.  It's on the road to Ullswater via the Kirkstone pass.  We went in February 2005 and it was snowing and the wind was howling down the mountains - you could hear it before it reached you - you are in the valley.

We are not members of any clubs so found it hard to find a site open all year round in the Lake District.

You will be cold in the winter but as long as you are properly equipped and have the right kind of sleeping bag you should be fine.  See if you can get some propane gas as butane will freeze.

Enjoy yourselves

Deb

Hi Den

We camp, (tent) , all year round, we have no trouble finding campsites in the lakes.

PLEASE USE THE CAMPSITE SEARCH TO LINK TO SITES

It does get very cold , you must take a heater.

When it's too cold to sit outside and it's really cold , one tip is, empty out the bedroom and put your table , chairs etc in there for the evening , and you will find you are more comfortable in there. The "room" is enclosed with no draughts making it so much more easy to keep warm.

See also my top-tip about flooring, this stuff made our floor so much better, you will really be suprised how much cold comes from the floor, especially coming through the blow up mattress , if you use these, you feel the cold even through your sleeping bag .

You must use proper 3 / 4 season sleeping bags, the less insulated ones are no good at all, as you don't generate heat just lying there all night, so you become very cold very soon.

What really makes a difference to winter camping is the long dark nights, make sure you have plenty to keep you all occupied.

Also, it's very wierd being the only tent in the field !! as we have been !! Great for the showers though, no queue !!!

Camping & walking in the Lakes through winter is brilliant, if you have the gear (and the weather, ie dry and sunny).

Have you used this site http://www.walkingworld.com/home/index.asp

It's brilliant for walks. Well, well worth the membership fee.

Who knows , may see you up there in the depths of December.Look out for the red MGF and say hello !!!

Cheers
