Hi Den
We camp, (tent) , all year round, we have no trouble finding campsites in the lakes.
PLEASE USE THE CAMPSITE SEARCH TO LINK TO SITES
It does get very cold , you must take a heater.
When it's too cold to sit outside and it's really cold , one tip is, empty out the bedroom and put your table , chairs etc in there for the evening , and you will find you are more comfortable in there. The "room" is enclosed with no draughts making it so much more easy to keep warm.
See also my top-tip about flooring, this stuff made our floor so much better, you will really be suprised how much cold comes from the floor, especially coming through the blow up mattress , if you use these, you feel the cold even through your sleeping bag .
You must use proper 3 / 4 season sleeping bags, the less insulated ones are no good at all, as you don't generate heat just lying there all night, so you become very cold very soon.
What really makes a difference to winter camping is the long dark nights, make sure you have plenty to keep you all occupied.
Also, it's very wierd being the only tent in the field !! as we have been !! Great for the showers though, no queue !!!
Camping & walking in the Lakes through winter is brilliant, if you have the gear (and the weather, ie dry and sunny).
Have you used this site http://www.walkingworld.com/home/index.asp
It's brilliant for walks. Well, well worth the membership fee.
Who knows , may see you up there in the depths of December.Look out for the red MGF and say hello !!!
Cheers
