Sorry I haven't replied earlier but was out doing an afternoon boot sale and then nodded off!

Nowhere on Heligan Woods is to-o-o-o-o far, (even for me as a decrepit), from the loos coz it's a smaller site than many.

If your pitch is 'opposite' reception, I'm assuming that it's one those along the pitches than end in number 77 or so?

Don't worry, coz these are separated by a row of bushes/trees between those pitches and the little access road that runs along infront of the reception. The shop is next to reception so quite handy to be close for that too and there's a walk through at one point in the bushes too, (an official walk through)

Only thing I will warn you of, is that the pitches along that row are fairly steep. Didn't notice if you've got a tin tent or canvas? But when we pitched on about number 74 or something, (two from the very end of the row), we didn't have any probs once up there but did see one other outfit burn out it's clutch in the attempt! It just meant the front legs of the tin tent being quite upright and needing to use those chock thingies which we always have in the front locker anyhoo.

Heligan Woods is a lovely, and fairly peaceful, site. Very well tended and lovely shower facilities plus a family bathroom and launderette.

For anything else, you get free unlimited use of everything on their sister site of Pentewan about five minutes drive away.

Go for it...you'll love it

Only 6 days to Heligan Woods and counting...every bl**dy one of 'em

Thanks Hippy,  the hedge and loo situation sounds fine but not the sloping - we have a large trailer tent and I HAATE sloping pitches!  Obviously that is why there are three of them available, as you say, 74 upwards!   So,,, off to looe again for us, will try Heligan woods for a weekend, not too far from us in Devon.  Have a lovely time, thanks for the advice .  Jackie X

Ohhhh go on......rub it in! Just coz we were too late to get an EHU at Pentewan

I'll get there next year.......watch this space

Been going there for about12 years apart from the twice before we've had to go on Heligan Woods and this time, but....it is a lovely site all the same. Just miss me early morning fishing from the rocks at Pentewan while hubby sleeps blissfully on

And before you get too-o-o-o-o excited about going to Pentewan, please bear in mind that I'm in the area and have to say that me, good weather and Cornwall are rarely ever in the same sentence

Pack your wellies and kagouls

Course, there's gotta be a first time for everything....right?

Hi Hippy Chick, thanks for your previous posts, Pentewan is indeed a great site we had a marvellous week there, great weather (totally un-natural for Cornwall) and great company. ( not trying to rub it in at all promise)

My eldest son is now rather jelous and wants to go next year mainly because of the mackeral fishing available. I assume you fish from the beach or have you a special location that you are not letting on to?????

I prefer to fish from the rocks at the end near Pentewan village tbh. Have done the odd bit of night fishing from the beach but only caught flatties and coz the new tin tent is heavier than our last one, we try to cut down on weight where possible so taking the pods for the rods isn't an option now.

Friend of ours once, (and only once), caught a bass from the rocks at the far end of C field, but I'm sure that was a fluke!

But our main fishing whilst in that area is actually Mevagissey harbour. Now that they've extended the other side of the harbour wall just for us fisher folk, (bless 'em), it's a good place when the mackerel are in. You always know when the mackerel are coming in coz you get loads of those pesky, honking garfish! Yuck! Boy do they whiff!!And once you've had one on your hook, you've got green scales EVERYWHERE! Never have worked out how they even get on me shoes?

Any side of the harbour is fine for mackerel though, just beware if fishing from the left hand side, (as you walk onto the harbour that is), that this side gets very, very weedy especially in windy weather.

I can't do that feathering for mackerel where you're constantly casting and reeling straight back in with anywhere from 3 hooks upwards though coz of me neck and back problems. Hurts too much and if I was lucky enough to get three mackerel on at once, I'd have to act 'like a girl' and ask for help to land 'em! I don't do the 'acting like a girl' thingy - Mrs. Independent as possible me

I tend to do more float fishing nowadays but catch plenty that way. Used to do more legering and caught no end of those beautiful Wrasse, various species plus millions of liccle blennies

Btw tell your son not to fall foul of the vacuum packed baits that they sell in the shop on Pentewan site or village. Best bet is to get some frozen sandeel or mackerel from the Shark Angling Centre in Mevagissey. Way best and if you get the large sandeel, you can cut 'em in half so double the amount!

Hope he gets loads of decent weather and fish when he goes.

Hi Hippy Chick

Just to let you know Mount Caravans are now doing proper bait ie frozen sand eels, mackerel, squid as well as live lug & rag. We did our usual fishing off the harbour wall but my son only caught one mackerel & me nothing. There where a few squid about dragging the float under but didn't manage to catch any though. Chap a bit further towards the end did a bit better catching a couple of garfish! Hope you have better luck

Pete
