Hi Hippy Chick, thanks for your previous posts, Pentewan is indeed a great site we had a marvellous week there, great weather (totally un-natural for Cornwall) and great company. ( not trying to rub it in at all promise)
My eldest son is now rather jelous and wants to go next year mainly because of the mackeral fishing available. I assume you fish from the beach or have you a special location that you are not letting on to?????
I prefer to fish from the rocks at the end near Pentewan village tbh. Have done the odd bit of night fishing from the beach but only caught flatties and coz the new tin tent is heavier than our last one, we try to cut down on weight where possible so taking the pods for the rods isn't an option now.
Friend of ours once, (and only once), caught a bass from the rocks at the far end of C field, but I'm sure that was a fluke!
But our main fishing whilst in that area is actually Mevagissey harbour. Now that they've extended the other side of the harbour wall just for us fisher folk, (bless 'em), it's a good place when the mackerel are in. You always know when the mackerel are coming in coz you get loads of those pesky, honking garfish! Yuck! Boy do they whiff!!And once you've had one on your hook, you've got green scales EVERYWHERE! Never have worked out how they even get on me shoes?
Any side of the harbour is fine for mackerel though, just beware if fishing from the left hand side, (as you walk onto the harbour that is), that this side gets very, very weedy especially in windy weather.
I can't do that feathering for mackerel where you're constantly casting and reeling straight back in with anywhere from 3 hooks upwards though coz of me neck and back problems. Hurts too much and if I was lucky enough to get three mackerel on at once, I'd have to act 'like a girl' and ask for help to land 'em! I don't do the 'acting like a girl' thingy - Mrs. Independent as possible me
I tend to do more float fishing nowadays but catch plenty that way. Used to do more legering and caught no end of those beautiful Wrasse, various species plus millions of liccle blennies
Btw tell your son not to fall foul of the vacuum packed baits that they sell in the shop on Pentewan site or village. Best bet is to get some frozen sandeel or mackerel from the Shark Angling Centre in Mevagissey. Way best and if you get the large sandeel, you can cut 'em in half so double the amount!
Hope he gets loads of decent weather and fish when he goes.
