We have just returned from a few days at Shortferry Caravan Park, a site we visited two years or so ago when we were into tenting. Shortferry no longer accepts tents, but as we now have a lovely touring caravan this wasn't relevant. What was relevant however was the woeful state of the touring facilities. The 3 touring fields (with I'd guess 70 pitches or so) were originally served by a single toilet block with one wash-up and one toilet disposal point. This has now been supplemented by a new porta-cabin toilet block. Oh, and one of the Gents toilets is not screwed to the floor, making a visit an adventure you'd rather not repeat. Yes, I know we have a toilet on board the 'van but I'd rather use the porcelain than empty a fermenting toilet cassette on a hot morning.

This also remains the only site I have visited without dedicated grey water disposal - the options are (1) tip it in the hedge (2) damage your back lifting a heavy Waste Master onto the toilet disposal unit (3) tip it in the dyke-cum-open sewer which runs parallel to the touring fields access road. The stink from this ditch leaves you in no doubt that you are close to the touring fields.

On arrival I had to do a litter-picking session to avoid our pitch looking like a tip - pieces of rubbish everywhere made the whole area look a total mess.

Additionally, there is a rubbish tip at the far end of Field 3 with only a chain across it - which isn't going to stop any kid wanting to explore the discarded sofa, caravan chassis etc. - also a discarded caravan sits forlornely just waiting to be torched, hopefully with nobody in it.

The kid's park ("newly refurbished") was really disappointing - a rusty slide, a tiny obstacle course and a tot's plastic slide does not really constitute a play park you'd be happy to leave your kids to play in.

This really is camping in the Dark Ages and we won't be going back. This is a real pity as with a little investment (Under New Management according to some sites) this could all be made good and the other site facilities can be enjoyed without these shortcomings.

It should be noted that the static caravan owners all seem happy enough - maybe the site would be better off simply not accepting tourers any more.

Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!
