If you are in the CCC, they have a holiday meet on for a few weeks at Hales camp site just outside Cheadle, only 10mins drive or so from Alton Towers.. kiev

If the closer ones are full nr to Cheadle try Glencote Caravan Park in Cheddleton nr Leek Tel 01538 360745 or www.glencote.co.uk ..I personally havent stopped here but live nearby and looks a small cosy site.with ok facilities for a short stay .Near too 3 mins walk is a steam railway open for short rides, plus the local pub is also only about 3 mins walk away and you can sit outside by the canal with the kids and have tea. This site is proberly about 30 mins drive from Alton Towers. Plus the local town of Leek 10 mins drive is nice try the swimmingpool at the leasure centre,(no slides or anything fancy) but it will keep the kids good if its raining.. Also close is Tittersworth reservoir, this has a good visitor centre and large outdoor area for the Kids.. Hope this is Usefull..
We've been to Glencote once and are contemplating going again...(my in-laws live near Alton Towers) we found it very clean and well looked after, with helpful staff. And our children loved the steam train which went by at the weekend (especially my young son). The ducks know that campers have food .. so go on a wander through the campsite every now and again.
Thanks for all your suggestions, I have tried about 5 or 6 parks and all seem to be full so am giving up on the idea of Alton Towers and thinking about Somerset instead. Just wondering how far in advance people usually book?
