Hello  

Just wondered if anyone can tell me more about the Reedham Ferry Touring Camp?  I have read all the reviews and it sounds nice, but I notice a couple of people mention the ferry which it seems you have to use to reach the campsite??  One reviewer says the cost is £3.40 and I wonder if anyone knows whether this is a one-off charge for your stay at the site, or if you have to pay EVERY TIME you have to leave and return....?? Given there is no shop on site, and that we may want to leave to explore from time to time(!) it could turn out to be a very expensive stay if we have to use and pay for the ferry each time.  I am surprised the ferry isn't mentioned on the camp website .  If anyone can give me more info I would be very grateful as we hope to go next weekend, but this may change things.

Hi angnfam. If you read the members review on this website it appears that you can bypass the ferry using a different road. This may be quite a lengthy diversion depending on where you are in Norfolk. Ferry road Reedham, goes from Reedham across the ferry to Norton Subcourse and onto the main roads again

We were at this site a couple of years ago and weren't very impressed - the cost of the ferry was one reason as we had to use it or take a very long detour. The facilitites weren't kept that clean either - not a site we ever intend returning to!!

I have not stopped at the site, but have eaten and had a beer or two in the pub and I can recommend the pub for food and a brilliant service.  I was on a boat on the Broads at the time and we stopped for the evening.

If you stay here I would suggest a visit to the pub is worth it!

Sorry, just re-read my original post and missed a 'not' out which completly changed things.

It should have read "If you appraoch Reedham via the A47, Acle area, you do NOT need to use the Ferry".

Hi all, thanks for your replies. 

I've got my head round the ferry confusion now ~ luckily we'll be approaching from the west and can easily choose north or south with little effect on time or distance....so feel happier about that!!  But I'm a bit concerned about the negative reviews, like yours, Jayne.  What was so bad that you'd never go back?  Was it just the facilities?  Do you have children and if so how did they enjoy it?  I must admit with it being our first camp I'm dreading the kids being really bored (particularly if the weather doesn't improve) and a dirty shower and toilet block could really put us off ~ I guess that was the case for you? 

Has anyone else been more recently and had a good experience of Reedham Ferry?

Don't know how old your children are, but please be aware that the river at Reedham is treacherous with very strong currents.

It was mainly the facilities I think - it was wet the weekend we went, but the toilets/showers were covered in mud for the whole w/end. Now because of the conditions that may have been excuseable to a certain extent (although some sort of mat at the door would have helped) - but what wasn't excuseable in my opinion was the fact that the floor was constantly swimming in water you had to paddle your way in and out. No as I said - not one I would return to - there certainly wasn't much for children as far as I remember (we don't have any ourselves)and with the fast flowing river near by I would go so far to say it's could actually be very dangerous.

Must also disagree with Ratty about the pub as well - we were there on the Sunday and there was v little choice food wise and yes ok they were busy, but we waited over an hour for our meal - which by my book is far too long!!

Crikey Jayne...sounds like an experience not to be repeated!!  It's really hard trying to decide on sites for a first trip, particularly when they are mostly booked up now. 

You have to sort of weigh up that everyone will have their own opinions and decide whether to take a chance on what could be a fab weekend, or listen to your negatives and take heed...I'm not great at decisions and now I'm really undecided!! 

Our children are 8 and 12 and I had pictured us playing with our dinghy in the river.

They both swim but if it's fast flowing maybe that's not so good...is it deep?

We camped there a couple of years ago and liked it. The showers were alright when we went but it only rained the one night so I can't say what it would be like if the field was muddy.

You only have to use the ferry if you are going south of the river, which we did'nt do while we were there.

The pub is right next to the campsite and was alright but I have to agree with The Admiral about the slow service for food.

As well as the river right next to the site,( it's actually higher than the camping field, feld back by a bank) there is a large pond in the middle of the site.

I would stay there again but I wouldn't like to take small children. 

Angela. Have not stayed on the site but stayed in a cottage in Reedham itself and have been through a couple of time on the broads. DO NOT think about letting the kids anywhere near the river in a dinghy or swimming or anything, a 45 ft cruiser struggles to keep up with the tidal flow in the area.

If the pub near the site is not suitable there are at least 3 good ones in Reedham itself, 30 mins river walk or 5 mins drive. If your looking to pass some time sitting by the bank in Reedham at teatime can be fun watching the boats moor and the swing bridge go for the trains coming past. The train station is 20 mins lovely walk away from the site if you want a day in Yarmouth, Lowestoft or Norwich without driving, not sure of frequency.

I personally LOVE Reedham but as i say i cannot comment on the site.
