We are hoping for a week or so away in september but cann't decide on where.

First thoughts are Glastonbury, possibly the old oaks, maybe cheddar gorge, wells etc, Now i can't decide if this will do us for a week or whether to head to Devon /cornwall for a few days as well, have damage Barton in mind or the lizard but don't know if we'd be better leaving this for another trip. I'm looking at up to 11 days away.

Also any must see places in this area. we are in a camper van and don't usually spend more than 3 nights on a site, but would be interested in places we can get to on foot or by bus from a site.

Hiya Jules

Depends on how much you like the coast? There is plenty to see around Glastonbury area (I'm from Glastonbury) but the coast line isn't great ... Burnham on mud or Weston.... Bit further down you have minehead, porlock etc which is a lot better!

As for inland places to visit well ... Glastonbury has an abbey & the tor to climb, also rural life museum & wearyll hill , next door is Street where the Clarks village outlet is , great for any shopaholics! Wells is well worth a visit the catherdral has been newly restored & has the bishops palace next door complete with moat & black & white swans! Pretty compact city (smallest in England!) market on Wed.

Cheddar is great for walking, caves to explore & nice pubs!

Nearby Wookey hole - caves ,papermill & some new exhibits!

Bath is about 45 mins from Glastonbury - newly open spa baths, nice shopping, beautiful architecture.

Mendips is on your doorstep again perfect for walking, well worth a visit is Priddy(mendip heights site is close by!) 2 nice pubs!

Somerset levels again more wlking, there is a bird reserve just outside Glastonbury & deer have also been spotted!

The south dorset coast is only an hour from glastonbury so a possibility for a daytrip in the van? Lyme Regis is very pretty.

Most attractions in town are accesible by bus (staying at Old Oaks), if you are staying at Mendip heights though you would need to drive out! Buses definetly run from Glastonbury to street, wells, cheddar & Bath. the nearest train station would be castle cary & wouldn't link you anywhere userful!!

Hope you have a lovely time wherever you choose, september is the better time of year to visit glastonbury, summer can be very busy!

Cheers
Helen

We have just spent nine days in Glastonbury (Old Oaks) and enjoyed it very much. Did most of the things Helen mentioned.  We also spent a few days there last September and I must agree with Helen again, it's not so busy in September.

We live in Falmouth which is fairly near the Lizard. I really like this area of Cornwall. Great for walking along the coastal path. It's very flat so good for cycling, not that we do much of that now. It's not the place to go if you want alot of nightlife apart from some very good pubs.

Where ever you go I hope you have a really nice time and the weather is kind to you.

Have you been to Salcombe in South Devon? Very beautiful and several camp sites, try Alston Farm or Sun Park.

This one's in Glastonbury & was lovely when we went in 2004: http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=2109
More recent reviews indicate it's still lovely.
