Dont quite know if I am posting this in the right forum but thought it may be of interest - I know the site though never stayed there due to lack of appeal, preferring Bay View site across the road which is excellent
CAMPSITE CLOSED OVER DANGEROUS ELECTICITY SUPPLY
A POPULAR local campsite has been closed down on safety grounds after ''major concerns'' over the state of its electrics.
The power supply at the Castle View Caravan site in Pevensey Bay was turned after an inspection by environmental health hfficers from Wealden District Council's Health and Safety Unit. The immediate action was taken to protect the safety of holidaymakers and staff at the site. It followed a routine inspection of the popular campsite on the Pevensey Bay Road, which revealed major concerns about the electrics. Officers found: n No earthing system to the main installation. n No Residual Current Devices (RCD). n Live exposed conductors in various places. n Incorrect cables laid underground which had no mechanical protection. n Water ingression into electrical sockets. The power shutdown followed long standing concern by councillor Lin McKeever, Pevensey and Westham ward representative on Wealden District Council. She said, ''I have been working on this issue for a number of years following concerns raised by visitors and villagers to me. ''These concerns have centred around the site and I am pleased that progress has been made. ''Pevensey Bay attracts tourists from all over the country and we must ensure that health and safety is our number one priority.'' A prohibition notice was served, requiring the mains electricity supply to the site be turned off. Health and safety improvement notices were also served on the proprietor requiring a range of works to be undertaken before the power supply was returned. Councillor Margaret Kirkpatrick, portfolio holder for housing and community development, said, ''Wealden District Council takes health and safety issues extremely seriously and will not hesitate to exercise its prohibition powers where, as in this case, there is a risk of serious personal injury. ''It is very important that the public have full confidence in the services that we provide and know that we will not hesitate to keep Wealden safe.'' The site is a popular destination for touring caravans and also includes a number of static holiday homes. It had around 25 of the static caravans occupied and 50 touring caravans were on site when it was inspected on Tuesday. Power supplies to visitor caravans have been switched off, as has lighting in and around the site, and a hot water supply in the shower blocks no longer works. The council has taken the necessary action to protect the general public and those using the site, it said. Housing officers have also assisted the owner in identifying alternative pitches locally for those touring caravans on the site, and sourced diesel generators as a means of providing temporary lighting. It has also arranged for the council's own electrical contractor to provide advice and guidance to the site owner regarding remedial works. The proprietor of the site, Neville Brabon, has co-operated with the council and asked all of his visitors to leave by Wednesday evening. He was unsure as to when the site would reopen when contacted by the Herald this week.
