Hubster and DS have gone off camping on the moors for the bank hols. It was a last minute thing & they went to a site where you don't have to book.
The website said the price in high season is £7.50 per adult & £4.00 for children 5 to 12. So that's £15 a night, right? DS being 13. Except it also said "If your tent is designed for a significantly larger number of people than those actually using it, there may be a surcharge." And boy was there a surcharge. They're paying the equivalent of £27 a night! (£15/night for 5 nights + £7.50/night for 3 nights for guest +£7.50/night surcharge). Plus they charge for the showers
They're in our family tent, a Sunncamp Antigua, which is nominally a 10-person tent and one other person will be joining them at the weekend. Does anyone actually sleep 10 people in one of these so-called 10-person tents?
And I've never heard of a surcharge like that in more than 30 years of camping. I've never heard of a surcharge full stop for that matter.
We saw what they said on the website before we went & thought it might be around the 10% mark and just a get-out clause for the site owners.
Hubster isn't complaining, he's not an argumentative **** like me. And I'm a little embarrassed because I think I said on a thread here only yesterday that I'd never complained about the price of a pitch
Is it just me or is this a bit steep?
Liz
Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!
we are paying £11 per night for a 8man tent slepping 5 of us (2adults and 3 kids) no charge for showers. i think thats plenty enough to pay. the site is basic with limited facilities but well maintained. some people (in their greed) charge themselves out of business, it doesnt make you want to go back does it?
Hi Lizex, hope that you are going to submit a review of the site on here. Let everyone know then, whta to expect, we have never heard of a surcharge either.
They can review it when they get back, though I doubt if son will have sampled the showers. All I'll say for now, is it's on the list of campsites that allow fires and they had trouble finding a pitch without a black patch in the living area.
Nicki, it's not your moors ... *much* further south than that.
Perhaps it is because some tents now are so large they take up a large area of the site. If they are charging per person a large tent with 6 people in would give a large revenue than the same tent with two people whilst taking up the same amount of the site. I can understand it but do agree that £27 is a bit steep, especially if the site wasn't full up or anything.
