We are all entitled to our opinion – that’s been stated often enough in this and other threads.  I can’t respond for Trevor but I recognise that he does run a small ‘adults only’ site in a peaceful location.  Many of his visitors are regulars and would, I imagine, arrive in small groups.  He is only just expanding the second field and I would envisage he’s not had a lot of experience with large groups of tenters.

With the advent of cheap tents and other offers there has been a noticeable increase in novice casual campers.  These have already been discussed on this site and there have been more than a few complaints.  There have also been discussions about larger groups of adult campers getting together and there have been a few complaints about the problems they can cause.

Now I’m not suggesting Lyn’s group (of seven?) or Jayne’s group of seven are novice casual campers or likely to cause problems.  However I am trying to see this from the site owner’s point of view, i.e. a Bank Holiday weekend, large groups arriving on site.  We don’t know what sort of impression Trevor got or what his concerns might have been.

Lyn and Jayne allege that Trevor was keeping a close eye on members of their group.  Well perhaps he was but surely that’s what you would expect a site owner to do anyway?  There are a number of vans stored on site and there is more than just camping and caravanning going on there?

Could it also be that Trevor has had a recent bad experience that we don’t yet know about?

I for one enjoyed my stay at Canal Side.  I saw Trevor out and about at all times of the day and we always exchanged a cheery wave or a few words.  Trevor was always very helpful even when he was busy around the yard, the site and the other end of the field.  He was particularly helpful when he gave me directions to help us on our journey south to Cornwall.

While I sympathise with both Lyn and Jayne, and respect their views, I am looking forward to our return to Canal Side.

Don't really wish to open this debate back up again - however, its not the fact that site owners may have had a rotten experience with a group of rowdy tenters - I think the problem was, that even after our intrepid campers arrived and were seen to be respectable and then were settled with their adult family members the ice did not thaw.

I can fully appreciate the site owners being wary. Im off somewhere this weekend and was subject to a barrage of "what age are you" "are you rowdy" "how big is your single sex group" etc etc - before they would even tell me if they had space. - Its very of putting to feel unwelcome before you have even arrived!

How about the owners waiting to see what the group were like prior to giving them a lecture, keeping an eye on them etc etc.  You have to give people the benefit of the doubt and not be so judgemental especially in the hospitality, customer service industry.  I agree he should be stipulating the rules in such a manner as not to alienate anyone.  Every group of campers / caravanners etc are different and I can appreciate that maybe he has had a tough season but The Admiral et al payed good money for that site and should have been treated the same as everyone else who turns up at that site.

Thanks Ingers and Quinnys, that's what I was going to say.

Can i just clarify that we arrived seperately in 2 pairs and a three so as far as i can see arrived in a small group and 7 is small.

I am glad for you Carr and Hazel that you had a good time at Canal Side because I felt that there was every possibility we would too.

It is a lovely site, though I wouldn't class it as peaceful becuse of the A41, the noise from the houses by it and walkers on the discued railway but would certainly class it as a site perfect for adults that's why Trevor's attitude was so annoying. As Jayne and I are seasoned campers we still remain mystified and amazed at what happened to us and my family especially as we were so well behaved.

I guess it didn't help matters with the tone of Joan's posting. I am sure those that continue to go will enjoy themselves...I sincerely hope so but we won't return.

Oh well as The Admiral said time to put this to bed.

Nora

Are you on about the fact that the road and old railway track are noisy during the day?  People don't just want peace and quiet while sleeping you know!  It's lovely to be able to read a book in quiet.

We have always said that if we owned a camp/caravan site we would print a polite leaflet with "Please Do`s" and "Please Don`t`s" and other relative info and hand them out to every new arrival when checking in as standard procedure, then no one can say they didn`t know the rules and no one can say they`re being singled out or picked on.

Cedar Gables in Bewl Water did that - makes it crystal clear and everyone sticks to it.  Its given to you before you get onto the site. Works well!
