Parkers Farm Campsite, Ashburton, Devon

Couldn't submit this review but felt it was megga important to say the very busy Dual carriageway runs right outside this campsite and kept loads of people awake all night! And I mean right outside! If you get the overflow field (H) which costs the same anyway? you are even lucky to be able to sit and stare at it aswell. Other people on the reviews have said it didn't affect them but I wonder if they were on the main site instead as I thought it was a disgrace! Anybody had any similar experiences here?

There is no mention of the roaring tarmac beast in their advertising surprisingly enough.

Don't know, thought it might have been because I slammed the site quite heavily but it could have been a delay in the processing. Thats what I've been told anyway.

Hi, we are just up the road at Holmans Wood and yes the traffic is rumbling away in the background all the time but to be honest, after 4 visits in recent weeks, I don't think about it now.

In a tent it was worse, which was our first stay in May but now we have the caravan I rarely think about it.

Hi Ali

I think you are right and you do get used to it after a while. It's far worse at night but I think people should know all the same. I was touring with the tent and there was a considerable difference from the first two weeks and the practically silent campsites I stayed at compared to this one. Maybe that was the reason I was so shocked by it. I was woken several times through different nights by horns tooting and all sorts, the continuous background rumble just fades into nothing after that. I wasn't the only one to mention it either.

Cheers Chris

Absolutely Chris, it is important peeps know the good and bad about sites.  We would prefer to be in a silent location but for now it suits us and our situation.  It is so easy to get to places, be it coast or moorland, Exeter or Plymouth.

So who else has been here and what do you  think???
Is it okay to have a motorway roaring agross your line of sight and not be warned about it beforehand by the site, pay top whack rates and be put in a field out of harms way or would you rather not make do, be placed where the leaflet implies you're gonna be placed, amongst the sculptured cosy private hedges. The reason you went there in the first place. Or would you just rather go somewhere peaceful and quiet instead?  Who's right you decide.

Hi Chrisuk

We have stayed on this site several times and I do feel that the site needs defending somewhat.

Firstly, it is not a motorway nearby, but the A38, and it is not right outside the site. It is about 400 yards from the main entrance, and all the pitches are further away from the road than 400 yards.

When we have stayed there it has not been in the main holiday season so we didn't find the road a problem. Granted there is road noise, but a general 'hum' in the distance which did not bother us.

That is a bit of a downside, I agree, but in our opinion the welcome and friendliness of the family and the wardens, plus the good faciliites far outweigh any disadvantage.

Blimey, Holmans Wood is literally just a slip road away from the A38 so I reckon we get more road noise than Parkers Farm then.

We stay at Parkers farm regularly. We have camped both in H field & on the terraces. Having stayed at over 75 campsites in the UK this has to be one of our favourites. The staff are lovely & friendly. The showers, toilets, wash up facilities are superb. The childrens play areas are well equipped. The bar & food are good. The entertainment is also good & a lot of emphasis is put into ensuring children have a good time with fancy dress / colouring competitions, farm walks, family bingo, karaoke.

As for traffic noise, yes there is a hum from the A38 but this has never presented a problem to us. The numerous good points far outweigh this minor problem.

As for "Top whack rates", I disagree, Parkers farm is very reasonable & we have paid much more on other sites with inferior facilities.

Well I disagree I'm afraid and there were plenty of other disappointed campers there not just me. I stopped at six sites this summer alone and it was the most expensive one actually, I have receipts to prove it. To be placed out in an open field furthest away from the services? what are you talking about? I didn't say anything against the staff or the shop or the area, just the main road which I personally didn't want to sit and look at, the fact I could hear it all night and not being placed where the staff actually implied that I would be placed. Think I spelled it out okay.

I just think other campers have the right to know before they get there, thats all. Whats wrong with that? Wether its loud or not so loud it's still there!

we have been to parkers farm many times we were up at pennynore when the owner let gypsies on we were up till 4 in the morning listerning to roy orbison and elvis nothing wrong with that but not at 4am lol so my hubby went driving around looking for a better site and only parkers would take us as we had a landrover 90 with sign writing on it wich had both mobile number and office number which i think may of helped. sadly we have heard that the owner rhona a very nice woman is going to sell up since the sad death of her husband.  it is great for kids and food is really good i only hope they sell to another family  who will kepp it as it is .family site through and through ps we did notice the road but not as bad as where we live on a main road

No idea what you are on about chrisuk1000, you submitted your review and it joined the queue with the thousands of others. In fact you submitted three reviews of the site, which caused us even more work.

Anyway, as you know now the review was made live once it got to the top of the queue, we told you this before you posted, so please dont make unfounded comments about the review system

As for your thoughts on the site, clearly they are not what everyone thinks, as the other reviews show. You slate the noise, saying it's unacceptable, seems the vast majority dont agree

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=1265

As 2tents says, why not buy some earplugs next time ....

Thanks
Ian
