Now that Shearbarn in Hastings no longer accepts tents, does anybody know if Stalkhurst has improved at all . I believe that it is now the only site in Hastings and we have stayed there a couple of times in the past but only when we couldn't find anything else. Although ,if you search for it on the net you will see nice detail and pic's it is not stated that it is in the middle of an industrial estate, poorly maintained with set temp showers that where not very clean the last time we were there.

If anybody has been there within the last few months, can you let me know if it has improved at all please. I am hoping that it has done so as I expect they now have what would have been the Shearbarn site custom up until they stopped taking tents.

hi annette, never been to shearbarn, but brakes coppice in crowhurst accepts tents, a really good site, proprieters very helpful, clean site, been there seven years running, although changed this year, went to scotland, but brakes coppice is the best i've stayed at  in hastings area, only 6 miles from beach, large pitches, surrounded by trees, very quiet.

We've stayed at Cobbs Hill Farm near Bexhill not far from Hastings. It was nice and friendly. See details under camp site search. We can also recommend Norwood Farm campsite at Newchurch, New Romney. Both much cheaper than Shearbarn   - but obviously don't have entertainment/pool etc. Cobbs Hill has playground. Norwood Farm is a lovely, small campsite with fantastic facilities on a sheep farm. If you ever want a cheap night at Hastings the Travelodge there is about a 7 mins walk to pier. You can get rooms for £15 if you see their website and book in advance. They have a restaurant also.

Hi Annette, sorry to hear Shearbarn has stopped taking tents, wonder why there is bags of space there. 25 miles east along the coast there is Marlie Farm which has everything you could need for the kids. Place teams with rabbits as big as Romney marsh  sheep (nearly). Only detrimental comment is the facility block is somewhat antiquated although it's always been clean when I've been there.....Mick

The reason they stopped taking tents is because they have put 136 new caravans and lodges in their place, after a 1.7 million expansion plan. It's such a shame. The locals were not happy either.

Battle is a very pretty and historic village I would try there for a camp site.

Annette,

We’re off to Cobbs Hill Farm in Bexhill-on-sea this weekend, if the weather improves. I’ve never been here before, but the reviews paint the right picture.

Annette,

or try kloofs - this site is reviewed on the appropriate part of this website, takes tents, has really clean facilities, and is a short drive up the road from Hastings. Thoroughly recommended, although it is very quiet, but loads of room for kiddies to charge around.

Wow, Kloofs does look lovely. Unfortunately I’ve a Hartford XXL, which makes the site a tad expensive.

Dear thermostat,

We stayed at Cobbs Hill last year. Nice site with shop. Toilets/showers fine. Nice flat, green site with some farm animals to see.   Had a bit a trouble with a group of noisy youths one night - they were kicked off site by owners the next morning. Campsite has big playground area which our kids loved. There's a large Lidyls a mile or two down the road which was v handy. Also fish and chip shop and other shops too.

I know you already know Hastings but there's lots to see in the area. Seven Sisters (towards Eastbourne) is worth a visit - nice flat walk from carpark to sea. They are talking about flooding the area to save erosion. See it while you still can. Alfrison is also nice (near Drusillas). Loads of places to see in the area. Beachy Head, Camber Sands, Hythe, the churches of Romney Marsh. Have fun.

Thanks for the recommendation. It sounds like a nice site and hopefully should be fairly empty as it’s getting late in the season.

I’m sorry to hear that you had trouble there. Fancy the owner letting a group of youngsters on.

Is there a chippie or pub selling food near enough to walk to?

You could walk into the village (I think it is called Sidley) not sure how long it would take though as we always drove, but it's certainly not too far. If I remember correctly you would turn right from the campsite, then left at the bottom of the country road when it meets the main road. Didn't go to any pubs in the area but I'm sure there's one in Sidley.   Ask the owners when you turn up. You probably can get bus from Sidley into Hastings - then have loads and loads of pubs and restaurants to choose from (my favourite fish n chip shop is the one opposite the pier close to the white rock theatre. You can sit and eat your fish and chips on the beach. yum yum. From Sidley following the road down to Bexhill you have a large Tesco Extra store, a McDonalds with play area (remember kid's socks). There's a nice little cafe on the beach (called surprisingly The Cafe on the Beach) through the railway arch onto Bexhill beach (to the left of shopping area. You can park just outside the arch for free for a few hours (opposite petrol station). From the cafe you can walk along the beach path into Bexhill itself via a little playground. Sometimes there are bootsales on the big green behind the petrol station on Sundays. My father-in-law lives in Bexhill so we go there quite a lot.

Ps have you seen the thread re Normans Bay? You could get yourself in the mags if you're around that w/e
