I'm looking for a site on the western side of the Cotswolds for a weekend away as follows:

  • Accepts Tents
  • Walking distance from a nice pub that serves food
  • Reasonable toilet block
  • Not too busy but the type of site where sitting chatting quietly over a beer at 11pm is ok

We will be adults only for this trip so we have no need for kids facilities, but would not mind a family orientated site.

Does anyone have a suitable favourite?

Thanks in advance

The Hoburne site is nice, it has good facilities for tents adults & families. It's easy to get to, just come off the M5 at J11A & head for Swindon, it's signposted up just after Cirencester. The site has everything on it but I don't know how far off site the nearest pub is.

The Hoburne is a bigger site with lots of facilities (I live very close by!) and the nearest pub is in the village which you could walk to (at a stretch), but the park is located on an unlit road with no lighting, I wouldn't fancy walking back along it. How about this one? http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=3137 It is located next to a pub and on the canal, just a few hunded yards from the Wetlands and Wildlife trust at Slimbridge. Handy for the places to visit over on the western side of the Cotswolds, but not far from the main roads for easy access to visit other places.

Thanks for the speedy replies.

I'd spotted Cotswold View which sounds ideal - however I think it's too far east for us. I'll ask the other people who are tagging along what they think.

Tudor Caravan Park sounds great - but I'm nervous about the toilet blocks as they sound like there could be queues to use the facilities. Does anyone know if its just the showers or are toilet cubicles in short supply?

Any other suggestions are welcome, thanks again

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=4722 This one is more mid-Cotswolds, but I've stayed there and it's a great site to sit, relax and chill out on. Again, probably better to drive to a pub, but there are a few in the neighbouring villages/hamlets to choose from.

Hi AngieGL

Do you know Mayfield Park which is quite close to you? It seems ok from the web site but I wonder how much noise there is from the A417, and also if there are any pubs close by?

Hi BrummyGit,

I do know Mayfield Park - there are residential park homes in the front bit, then you have the camping field at the back. It seems to slope a bit to me and I can say that because it is clearly visible from the A417 which I go on quite a bit. It never looks full and the tents are spaced out, but I would definitly say there is road noise. No pubs within walking distance at all, would need to drive into Cirencester or the outskirts. There was one, but it has now been developed into a home. I know someone who lives in one of the park home, so I could ask her about the road noise if you like?

After wracking my brains to think of a local-ish site within walking distance of a pub, I came up with this one- http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=1023 - Malmesbury although in Wiltshire is still classed as being south Cotswolds and is handy for all areas. This site is in Malmesbury and there are some nice pubs within the (small) town itself that you could walk to. The town is lovely, very old and historic with a ruined Abbey and the Abbey gardens are rather famous, as are the owners who like to garden in the nude!!!!!

Thanks, it sounds like I should give it a miss. There will be much nicer venues in the area I'm sure.

I'm tempted by Tudor Caravan Park and Cotswold View but don't know what to do.

Hi Angie,

You are too fast for me - another choice before I had typed my last reply.

Thanks for your help - it is really appreciated. I'll have a good read through all of the site reviews again and try to choose.

Now how are you at booking the weather?

Utterly crap!  I spent ages persuading OH that last w/e would be good for camping (he wanted a quiet w/e at home) and now that he has agreed to this w/e being ok, the weather has closed in (he refers to this a trifle too gleefully to my liking!) and I am scratching around for sites that a) are an hour away from home b) absolutely no noise (road, child etc), potential food (eg. farm shops a priority, pubs) c) we do have children !!!!

Well I also hope this coming weekend is good as we are camping near Ludlow.

I've now taken the plunge and booked Tudor Caravan Park at Slimbridge for the weekend afterwards for the Cotswold trip. I'll post a review when I return.

Thanks for to all for the great advice recived.
