Appreciate the concern Vic. It's 654 miles which at an average of 40 mph totals 16.35 hours. That's 8 hours driving plus 3 hours resting for a 11 hour day, i.e. 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The above figures are really conservative, it's motorway all the way so 40 mph average should be easilly achievable, and 3 hours break time per day is a bit overkill too.

So don't worry Vic. If at anytime I feel I'm not gonna make it I'll pull over for an extra night.

well i have just done a AA route planner and from aberdeen to newquay it reckons 14 1/2 hrs driving!!!!  673 miles and thats worked out at caravan speeds!!

you would need to be looking at a halfway point somewhere south lancs. trouble is that will put you in the awful traffic at bristol in the morning nevermind from wolverhampton down to the m5.

I did it two years ago without a caravan and in the height of summer. Took 14 hours with bumper to bumper conditions for at least 4 hours. (Bristol and last 20 miles to Newquay). This time is October, before main kids hols. so no reason for heavy traffic (famous last words). We shall see.

To be honest, I don't think you'll have much trouble through the Bristol region at this time of the year. I live just off the M5 near to J14 & once the summer rush is over the M5 runs pretty well. When we came back up in August, the A30 had a couple of bits of roadworks on it but I reckon these won't cost many minutes for the october run. Obviously no one can plan for hold ups due to accidents but we'll be heading to Cornwall for the October half term & I can't see us rushing to leave too early the way we do in the summer.

The half term here in Scotland runs from October 6th for two weeks so is before your English version. However we do have to go back to school mid August which is a real pain.

Pluke,
It depends, of course, on the speed at which you tow but I regularly do Ayrshire to Maryculter in a oner in about 3 hours 20 minutes. Twice a year I do Ayrshire to Meriden in about 5 hours 30 minutes running time, taking a 30 minute break at Tebay.
Allowing for the fact that I'm about 30 minutes from the M74, that would mean a running time of about 9 hours from Aberdeen to Meriden, plus stops.
The big question/problem is the time at which you get down to about J12/11 on the M6. Any time after about 3ish and you can run into tailbacks all the way down to J8/M5, although you have the option of taking the toll road and then the M42 across to the M5.

David.

I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure!
