Hi everyone,

Just completed our first half year of caravan ownership and definately loving it. The question I have is that we have only been to dog shows so far for long weekends. We want to do a few caravan parks next year and lots of them accept dogs I know. Problem I have is how do you know how many they will accept. Do you have to find out from the owner?? If you book a holiday cottage, they will say, 1, 2 or just dogs meaning how ever many but the parks dont seem to specify. Please help. We have 3 by the way, but my friend has 8!

Ckeck website of some site they usually tell you how many dogs they allow.  Some only allow 2 other doesn't matter.

We went to site in Banbury that allow dogs didnt have limit and was only £1 per dog per visit, no per night charge for them.  Has a lovely dog walk.

Most site owners are more concerned about looking after our dogs rather than how many we have....As long as they are taken off the park for regular walks and don't run free and don't threaten anyone I suppose they won't be too bothered if you have one, two or even three.....Floyd.

Some sites will only allow 2 dogs and certain breeds are banned it's always best to ring first, we take ours everywhere but always check first as some sites don't allow dogs at all.

Most of the sites I have been to with my dog are more concerned with night time barking and noise than the number of dogs, All of the CC sites I have been to never asked the number of dogs nor have they charge for dogs but they do insist you keep your dogs under close control and on a lead at all times when on site. The CC sites have also provided good fenced off walking areas.

I have also used forestry commission sites that have no restrictions on the number of dogs but do have dog free pitching areas.

But do try and check if the site has restrictions regarding dogs, even a quick phone call should confirm this.

I cant speak about dogs on Caravan Club sites, as I usually use there CL sites, the small quite ones, I have 2 german shepherd dogs, and have never had any bother with owners, I usually ask when booking and the reply is keep them under control and clean up after them that will be ok.

I dont think Cravan Club sites state a dog limit per pitch.

Having said that you'll probably have trouble finding anywhere that'll accept 8 on a pitch.

We used to have 2 dogs, one large and one small, which we took with us on holiday. As they grew old and passed on, we did not replace them.  Our personal opinion is that if your dog really enjoys camping, you are lucky.  Get one that doesn't, and you have problems.     Regarding a site owner allowing 2 or more dogs per unit, or even no dogs at all, can be influenced by many factors.   However, I think the two most crucial factors are (1)the failure of some dog owners to exercise proper control at all times, and (2)the site owner's own vulnerability due to ever increasing responsibility under health and safety legislation.

For example, if a dog is loose and attcks another dog (or person) and someone is badly bitten, the injured party can often have a legal claim against the site owner.

Take the argument to its logical conclusion: it is not impossible for a site with 100 pitches to have 200 dogs on the premises at one time.  Not very likely, I know, but site owners have to plan for any eventuality.   It could easily average at one dog per pitch, which would still mean 100 dogs on site.

Bertie.
