can anyone give me advise on good camp sites & places around scotland 2007 for me wife & 3 kids aged 13,  8,   &   6...

Plan to visit in july / august..  When would it be best time to book...

Thinking of starting in the east & ending in the west..  Hoping to spot the loch ness monster..??

Don't need passport,, still on run from last year......

try gallanachmore in oban. Lovely views sea views, 2 miles to town centre , handy for tescos breakies if it lashing it down.  Wild camping: none better than Calgary Bay in Mull   irresistable!!. No showers but a toilet across from beach, showers available in tobermory in Mishnish Hotel.  If have a tent, you MUST experience this l;ittle piece of heaven. 

Also look up Gairloch Sands, again stunning

Ullapool also very nice

perthshire lovely also, look up   Blair Castle Camp site    larger site but immaculate

But remember dont leave without heading to Calgary Bay!!

for the eastern part of the trip head to Aberdeenshire, there are some great [fishing] villages some with municipal campsites, check out Aberdeen for museums if you are into that sort of thing, then head west along the coast, you should see Ospreys fishing off the Spey estuary, Gairloch is brilliant [just beware of the westerlies sending you back to where you started] with great views of Skye.

You've got to go to Glen Nevis near Fort William , the site is fantastic , in an incredibly beautiful setting, great bar / restaurant 5 minute walk away.Fabulous walks in the glen , River Nevis runs through the glen. Ben Nevis accessable to walk up if you fancy !! or go up the gondola of Anoch Mor , another mountain next to Nevis where the skiing goes on during the winter.

This site won Best campsite in Scotland for 2006, can't say anymore than that !!

We went in September , we are so glad we did, it's the best site we've been to in 3 years of camping, and as you can see , we like to travel round a bit !!!

I agree with previous folks about Glen Nevis in Fort William and Blair Castle in Blair Atholl but if you want to find something quite close to Edinburgh the CC site at Yellow Craigs is very nice and great for beach lovers.North Berwick is only about ten miles from Edinburgh and has a nice site called Tantallon which is within walking distance of the town and beach.

Nah - you don't want to come to Scotland.  Too much scenery, too many castles and too many people taking their time doing too many things.  Oh and the midges, especially near water, low-lying ground, and in the trees; they'll eat you alive, cover you with 'scratchits'.  You won't like the natives, many of them are trying to give you something for nothing, usually a knowing smile which can be a bit disconcerting.  You won't like being called 'Pal' or 'Big man'.  You might not like the food - they eat the deer and call it venison.  They eat the cows and call it 'Aberdeen Angus'.  They even drink a smooth brownish liquid and call it 'the water of life' - it's a con.  Nah you wanna stay somewhere nice like the Lake District or the Peak District.

Thanks for the info so far,,  Did peak district earlier this year,  I beleive once in a c.c site,, i'm at home any-way..  I'm the one who calls round for a cuppa sugar or the person who for-got to bring a tin opener so  it will suit me down to ground..

we did a 1400mile trip thru scotland in our new 'van and stayed at the fab 'Clachan' cc site in Killin. They have two in the area,one with all the facilties..showers etc and one at Clachan which has the usual basics and was perfect for us as we are lucky to have a shower etc on board. The area is breathtaking, easy to reach places like Pitlochery, canoeing on the loch ( 2 kids too aged 4 and 9) and loads of woody walks.totaly recommend it and will go back.

I can reccomend where NOT to go and thats castle cary campsite creetown in Dumfries and Galloway! Not the place to go if, (like we expected) the weather not too good. There wasn't enough to keep the children entertained in the surrounding area although beach on the one good day was lovely.The site seemed to have regular visitors and seemed a bit unfriendly towards holiday makers.

I went to scotland for th first time this year totally stunning we stayed at glencoe c and c site the showers and toilets were the  bestsites i ever seen. The views were out this world visited oban and fort william and loch ness best holiday yet. Our children are 15 and 13 even they were amazed at the sites
