Can someone recommend a family campsite, dog friendly, anywhere in Dorset/Devon that is NOT a large, holiday park type of place? We're after something small, sheltered, safe for young kids, away from any busy roads, with a nice local village pub/restaurant (not a chain pub) within strolling distance, a children's play area on site, a shop on site and close to the sea - walking distance preferably. We're not fussed about how good the showers/washing facilities are, just as long as there are some.

I am struggling to find a site that provides all of the above!

Many thanks.

Thankyou, yes I have done this campsite search ... lots of sites, which meet majority of our criteria but not all. We found one, but a review suggested it was on too much of a slope and not very well sheltered. Will continue my search!

This is just along the road from my Dad's house. I haven't stayed here (no need!) but as a location it is lovely. It is on a slope but most of this area is - their own website suggests that their camping fields are terraced.

Uplyme is right on the Devon/Dorset border and the site is tucked away in the heart of the village.

Try webbers park, exmouth. its a lovely site, with play park, small shop, village location, 10 mins in car to the sea, brand new shower block with family bathroom. A fantastic view acrose the esturty to Dartmore, and at night can see the lights of exeter, very beutiful.

As a second post I've just read some of the reviews and it sounds lovely - I might give it a try when all of the family are at Dad's house next time - it sounds much more peacefull.

The village shops are very close and lovely so I wouldn't be concerned about the site shop being small. The Talbot Arms at the bottom of Gore Lane is a great pub.

We have stayed at Nordens Farm near Corfe Castle a couple of times, a great site with childrens play area, shop and a B & B that offers lunch and evening dinner. It is a drive away from the beach at swanage, but netherless has easy access to some of Dorsets finest areas of outstanding beauty. Well worth a visit.

babybels71 , If you are posting details of a site, please ensure you link to their UKCampsite.co.uk listing, not direct to their website, to enable reviews etc to be read!

Cheers

Ian

I have recommended this site so often it's time they started paying me commission!

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=1234

It's an ideal, small, quiet, clean site with a play area and a little shop plus an indoor social room. 5-10 minutes easy walk from the seafront at Swanage (depending how fast you walk).

No 'village' pub, being just on the edge of the town, but if you walk down to the seafront, turn left, walk along the seafront road until it meets the houses (another 5 minutes or so) and the road starts to go slightly uphill, on the left hand side is a pub called the Crows Nest. It has a village pub atmosphere (many locals use it). It has a small cosy restaurant for adults and a larger room with tables where adults can eat with their children. Also has a small children's play area in the garden.

We have been looking for a site with the same qualities you've mentioned and have decided on Wareham Forest. Excellant reviews on here too

You could also try the Shrubbery in Lyme Regis were going back this year for our second visit, very nicley situated for most of the south coast attractions.

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=1206  -Fab, grew up here, local pub, local shop, hills, beach, have fun.

Have also stayed here as recommended previously.

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=1301

Am doing the right thing by adding in the review links of the sites in the hope that this will add to the credits of my goodwill balance of using this site!!!
