I'm looking for a basic campsite in the Yorkshire Dales. By basic I mean one that has a shower/toilet block but little else.

I would prefer to stay at a place that has good views from the site and one where tents are more prevalent than caravans. I'm not prepared to stay somewhere with rows of statics.

I've tried the main site in Malham (Gordale Scar, I think) and Mason's Farm in Appletreewick - both of which were very good.

Check out the National Trust site.

They have a small range of sites on farms.

Might be something on there.

Have you tried Bainbridge Ings just on the approach to Hawes?

Bainbridge Ings looks okay. I might try it. However, the presence of statics and a seemingly large number of touring caravans (from the photographs on the website) is a little offputting.

I have tried the NT website, and they list no campsites in North Yorkshire.

I went to Bainbridge Ings a few years ago. Both camping and in the static van they have.

Its is a lovely site and one day we will go back there.

Howgill Lodge nr Bolton Abbey is a lovely site with stunning views. Small site for touring caravans and tents. Just shower block and small shop for basics. Terraced pitches. Nice walk to pub. Their static site is elsewhere.

We're going to give Strid Wood, nr. Bolton Abbey a try this summer. Friends of ours have been a few times and thinks it's great.

Horton-in-Ribblesdale would get my vote- small site but easy walk to 2pubs (one nextdoor) a cafe and a post office.  Lots of people use it for the 3 Peaks challenge...

Happy camping!

I know you said the Dales but if you go further North I think you would like the NT site at Great Langdale (nr ambleside)

I do not think they take caravans and there are plenty of places to explore and 2 pubs within staggering distance!

We have used Masons quite alot so if you like Masons you will like Great Langdale!

Dalesbridge at Austwick (nr Settle) gets the vote from me. Have camped there, and stayed in the B&B facility. Excellent. If you are camping you can still have a full cooked breakfast in the main house. Also bunkhouses available. In Austwick itself is a good pub if a little pricey, Settle has pubs, chips shops and two indian restaurants. Clapham has a pub with a lively atmosphere (cavers, walkers etc)

check out their website (no I am not employed by them

The main house used to be an isolation hospital.

Never stayed at the Horton in Ribblesdale site, but looks good enough with fantastic views, good pubs and the Pen-y-ghent cafe.
