Kerry (The ring) or Galway are good bets, Dingle Bay is lovely.

Camping/Caravanning wise;- Anywhere West and South. The middle is a bit bland and the East coast, south if Dublin is way too comercialised.

Many of the touristy roads have high hedging on both sides of the road and so you can end up with a bit of "tunnel vision" so do try to stop whenever you get the chance of a decent view.

Also be aware that most lay-byes have Restriction Barriers on them to stop Travelling People from setting up camp on them. We found that this factor spoiled most of our Irish Trips and as we had to literally travel from one caravan site to the next with no chance of stopping anywhere for a picnic lunch. It was only when we arrived and set up the van, that we could then go and explore the area with the car on its own. This is not the type of touring that we are used to. We much prefer to make the journey part of the holiday.

Don't expect Irish Campsites to be as well regulated or the standards as high as here in the UK but you will enjoy Ireland and the Irish and for all I have said, we go there every 4 or so years and enjoy ourselves.

Don't know any specific sites but I have family on west coast and it's better than you expect. Try Mayo, Connamara or Kerry you won't be dissapointed.

I vaguely remember a site in Cong( of John Wayne fame) but don't know much about it, try site search whilst you are there you can vist Ashford castle, Ballintubber Abbey and take a drive up to Atlantic Drive for stunning views or climb Crough Patrick in your bare feet, well maybe not.

Anyway wherever you go on the west or south coast you'll love it.

We went last year and found the www.discoverireland.com website very useful for all apsects of planning for our hols. We went to the far SW tip and stayed at Barley Cove here. As others have said, this was not the most tiptop site in terms of quality, BUT the scenery and the Barley cove estuary were stunning, and the little harbour village of Crookhaven was walkable distance and had good pubs doing great food.

Are you going to visit Northern Ireland. Where are you sailing into? Lots of nice sites around. We would usually prebook as the best sites get booked up really quickly. We love Carnfunnock near Larne (port), Delamont Country Park (C&CC), Drumaheglis, and Benone Caravan Park. Also Castle Archdale on the shores of Lough Erne.

Nearest site to Rosslare is one at St Margarets Beach, Haven't stayed there ourselves but booked in for one night in August before our sailing to Pembroke

River Valley nice park in Redcross Co wexford

Lough Lannagh in Castlebar, Co Mayo is good

Roscrea is handy for a stop over if travelling from Dublin to the south west. Dingle peninsula is lovely, as is the Ring of Kerry. Travel round this in an anticlockwise direction when towing. We stayed at both Mannix Point and Wave Crest and whilst Mannix Point is handy for the town, cashpoints and petrol, we preferred Wave Crest for beauty and beaches. Tralee is good for a couple of nights. Donegal is the best kept secret. The Wicklow Mountains are good for a short stay and you can go to the coast, there is also a site callled Silver Strand above a lovely beach near Wicklow Towm.

To see a good a variety of this island I can recommend any of these 6 main areas - Dublin, Kilkenny, Kerry, Galway, North West, Down - (clockwise from Dublin) :

Camac Valley in Dublin - theres a regular bus from the site into Dublin city so you can see all that city has - the Book Of Kells, Dublin Castle, Guinness, Trinity College, Temple Bar, Art & Literacy Museums, etc. If you go there from the last week of July to the middle of August, try to catch a GAA football or hurling quarter or semi final at Croke Park (Sat / Sun) - though tickets can be hard to come by depending on the counties involved.

Nore Valley Park in Kilkenny, Co. Kilkenny - not that much of a normal tourist spot, but a nice town with history and a good few abbeys and forests, etc, nearby. The Rock of Cashel is also within reach from here, one of the countrys must-see places. There's a good Arts Festival 10-19th August which has lots of traditional music and stuff. Good home cooking on site, including cooked breakfasts.

Fossa C&C Park in Killarney, Co. Kerry - the Ring Of Kerry is very busy, but a must. This is a good central site to see the coast and the lakes.

Cong C&C Park in Cong, Co. Mayo - Galway coast, Galway City and Connemara are the real attractions, but this is a good site closeby in neighbouring Mayo.

Benone Tourist Complex near Limavady in Northern Ireland. The Giants Causeway and North coast are 30 mins from here to the East, and Donegal including Glenveagh National park is an hour to the West.

Delamont Country Park (a C&CC site) near Downpatrick in Co. Down, Northern Ireland - all the St Patricks related sites in Downpatrick, plus the Country Park itself. Good National Trust houses of Castle Ward and Mount Stewart, plus Rowallene Gardens, are nearby. Belfast is a good day trip.

Of course it depends how long you've got, whether you get bored at one place quickly or not, and how much you like touring or staying put - but I'd say 4 nights at each of the above would give a nice, relaxed flavour of Ireland as a whole. If you haven't (and I guess you haven't  ) that much time, Dublin and Kerry are the 2 must-sees imo, after that you won't be disapointed by any of the above. Dublin, Kilkenny and Kerry would be a good mix for 2 weeks, and a natural circular route from Dublin.
