Have been to Akebar my self several times - it IS V overcrowded at Bank Hols, with elderly facilities at stretching point. Have complained myself on this website before revires were pulled.

BUT I would go there rather than stay at home.

If you can, get there as early as poss on Friday to give you chance to bag a good pitch - there are several places where you can avoid being penned in, and judicious spreading out of chairs, parking of cars etc. can help keep some space around you.

It will be lively - I find copious red wine before bed the answer to that though.

Most people will be in the same boat - would like a few less campers about - which engenders a bit of the old "Dunkirk Spirit".

And it's a lovely bit of country.

runone if this is the site you are on about i am on a seasonal pitch there the site has been taken over and they are running the site down as all tthe tourers have to be off by the end of september changing over to statics talking to barbara the person taking the bookings up to last wed plenty of spaces for easter even seasonal pitches as a few have left you can even go month to month thats how i'm on £100 a month nice clean toilets and showers seasonal pitches are all serviced and hardstanding and was told that they only want mature people as nothing on site for kids but there again niether has most c&cc/cc sites

Why don't you go on Friday morning and pay for the extra night if they will let you.. that way  you can relax, enjoy the journey and make sure you don't forget anything.. surely it won't matter if you have booked and paid for the palce. I know it seems ike wasted money - but i hate rushing off straight after work and not getting settled until late.

have a good time whatever you decide.

All they need to do to turn the reviews around is to not book quite so many in at busy times, and to peg out individual pitches.

Their reviews tended to make grim reading, but they came from campers who had turned up at Bank Hols etc - and it's axiomatic that more people go camping when it's busy!

I've been at off-peak times and it's a different site - loads of space, less pressure on facilities.

And the staff/owners are perfectly friendly, although they tend to leave the site to its own devices at night - hence some bad experiences with noise.

If you can, or if you're naturally lazy like me, leave the ablutions to mid-morning when most people have showered and the toilet blocks have been cleaned.

have a happy weekend. we'll be on the N Yorks Moors at Rosedale Abbey - another site that's had mixed reviews but is said to have improved.

I'll be posting a review.

If anyone is still looking for a pitch for the bank holiday in the north east area Witton Castle in Bishop Auckland still have pitches available  with electric, they have made some improvements of late and now do ehu for tents , they are also stopping groups of youths from booking , it was the first thing they asked when i rang, what age group were we in. Some of the reviews are not that great but we visited last year and enjoyed it ,Was also told that we may pitch where ever we want, even with ehu, so we can find a vacant pitch suitable for us,not where they tell us we have to pitch .

regarding bryfers comment. this is not the same area as the castle eden dene, it is the castle eden walk way and the site is in the camping & caravan club book, under sedgefield 93 116 on the south side of the A689
