Hi all,

bit of a newbie question here, so feel free to give even the most basic of information - I won't be patronised!  My oldest son is 5 now, and I was hoping to take him camping - probably just an overnight stay for the first time, or maybe a couple of nights.  His school holidays start in a couple of weeks time so I was thinking of taking him then.  The last time I camped must be 10 years or so ago, so what I'm looking for is a campsite that's within about a 100 mile radius of Cheshire - so peak districk, maybe N Wales of S Lake District.  WHat I'm looking for is an excellent camp site and nearby attractions that would keep me occupied and him too!

Many thanks for your help,

G

Hello and Welcome

Our daughter is 4 and has been camping with us since she was 8 months old.

We have been to sites with entertainment, pools, crazy golf etc and on the other hand we have been to really basic sites - she has enjoyed all of the styles - i think at that age they love the whole thing - the car ride - help with the tent - sleeping in a tent - i know it sounds silly but they are the answers she gives us when we ask her what she likes about camping.

I think you should try to focus on the area you would prefer to visit and then search for sites in that area.  The campsite search facility on here is really good.  Independant people leave there views on the site and its area. So you do get a good feel for the place and site.

Obviously take small toys and colouring books etc.

Good sleeping bag - warm clothes etc which i am sure you will do.

We always take her comfort things for bedtime granted these are less now just 2 teds but even so its familar stuff - we also use a little night light that plays a tune and turns off after 10 mins - she is usually well asleep then.

If you do a search on the tent advice section there have been a few threads on camping with children - loads of really good tips - give it a try.

Hope you and your family enjoy your trip.

If you're only going for a day or two I wouldn't have thought you'd need any nearby attractions' as the campsite itself will keep you and him busy - setting up tent, cooking the meals - if you can't have an open fire, try a small disposable BBQ and cook hotdogs on sticks, or s'mores (toasted marshmallows between chocolate digestives) - if you're near woods then a five year olds imagination will do the rest - and don't forget the other 5 year olds at the campsite with whom he'll make friends.

I also have a 5 year old and we've been to loads of sites, but he loves just having plenty of space to run around and having the chance to make friends with the other children.  Try and get a site with a stream running through it and get him/her some wellies/sandals and a little fishing net,my son loves it.Take a water gun also and let him fill it himself he'll have fun for hours!  If i think of anyhing else i'll let you know.

Have fun!
