A tent is like a newborn born baby..... to some they all look the same..... but if its yours it's beautiful.

3.5kg is heavy for a tent itself, but think of it more as kilos per person - if there's two of you you'll only need one tent, one cooking set etc. If you spread the load between the members of the party, it doesn't matter whether the weight is coming from a tent or a TV. There's many schools of thought as to what is a comfortable percentage of body weight a person should carry, from the "just a poncho and some string" to "kitchen sink, with dishwasher" brigade.

How much does all of your gear weigh? My one man tent is a shade under 2kg, but I'm happy with an alcohol pop can stove and an old motorway service station teapot as my cooking gear. I sleep hot, so I don't need much more than a sleeping bag liner and a liberated British Airways blanket.

It also depends on what type of backpacking you intend doing. If it's the pursuit of miles, then lighter is better. If it's find a nice, quiet spot out of the way and relax for a few days, then you'll want camp comforts.

There is no right and wrong, just what works for you :-)

Agree with TheShaggyDA in terms of per-person weight. 1.75kg per person ain't bad. You can get lighter of course, but it's a matter of being comfortable, not winning a lightweight competition.

Double skin tents can often be split between two people - flysheet/pegs and inner/poles, or have one weighed down with the tent and the other carrying stove, mats, etc.

3.5kg is bit heavy but as the others have said if the weight is shared with other group members it is ok. Try to think of ways to reduce the weight, perhaps using lighter pegs, not carrying a groundsheet. It also depends on how far you intend to carry it. If its just a few Kms then carry on but for longer distances lighter gear will save you some energy.

I've carried a Gelert Eiger 2 by myself which is just a shade under 3kg, I wouldn't recommend it for long walks though, the most I did was 3-4 miles.

It was especially a struggle on the way to a camp-site near Bangor. I made the mistake of plotting how to get there through google maps and didn't realise the route involved a hill that resembled the one out of that Hovis advert from a few years ago!

On the bright side using Google maps did save me an embarrassing moment once. I bought two old booklets with walking guides that were printed in the late 1940s. One of the walks was through a small village near where I live called Hale. The walk talked about "turning right into a leafy country lane, far removed from the industrialised surroundings". To be safe before setting out I checked google maps, only to find the quiet country lane is now...

... a runway for Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

Depends on your fitness and what else you will be carrying ie food and water plus luxaries not including clothing.

Why not try a simulation load carry ie pack what you think you'd need pr take including water plus food and go for a brisk walk with the dog or whatever for a good few miles to test it out??

I agree with previous posts re sharing the tent load.

What kind of backpacking holiday do you intend on having?

I wouldn't have said 3.5kg is too bad for a tent.  The real issue is the total weight you intend to carry.

My tent is only a smidge lighter and I can get the total load down to 16-17kg...but only just!  As mentioned before, you should endeavour to carry a maximum of 20% of body weight.

A tent load cannot just be divided up.  One takes the poles and pegs and one takes the body of the tent - hardly a even distribution! (Yes you could detach the inner but it's good to have a quick pitch when needed.)

All this talk about percentage of your body weight gives me an excuse the next time my housemate teases me about being overweight - "But you don't understand, the more I weigh the more I can carry!"

There's probably a flaw in that plan somewhere though...

At 20% body weight, I'm allowed to carry 23kg. So that's a Nevada M, a survival blanket and a week's worth of Pot Noodles :-)

I mostly do cycle camping more than backpaking, but keeping weight down still applies, use to use a Terra Nova LaserLite (AKA Laser-Comp), one person tent even though advertised as 1+, at just over 1Kg very light indeed, still use that tent now and again, all other cycle camping I now take a Hilleberg Nallo2 GT, it tips the scales at 2.5Kg, but the upside is loads of room in the bedroom pod, plenty for two, and the porch takes two bikes with ease, you can see both tent in my gallery, pitched at Bolton le sands, both tents would be ideal for backpacking, as pack size is small even with specific footprint's.

Dare I suggest the 'value' noodles you get in the supermarkets?  Less packaging (no heavy rigid pot, smaller, cheaper, lighter...

The Nevada M is 18.2kg - if you backpack with that, then I would question your sanity.  I tried with a Khyam Freelander at a mere 10.5kg...never again!

I daresay someone is out there trying to carry a 20kg tent.  The poor noobs here do seem to get steered towards vast heavy tents...

Have you added in the weight of the string and the carrier bags to fasten all that Ray Mears gear to your body ?!

Oh, and you'll need a spoon for the Pot Noodles. But at least you'll be able to stand up inside your tent when you're eating.

Personally I'd prefer a tent around the 2kg weight max for everything outside winter backpacking. On a long trek every gram counts. Could you do a trial run with your backpacks fully loaded on a day hike and see if it works for you before you do your main trip?

3.5kg is a little on the heavy side but between two people it's not too bad, go for it try it if it's ok thats fine, if it causes issues then look at it's replacement. When you have tried your kit out then you can start to look at replacing some gear for lighter stuff.Beware however there is nearly always a trade off, if it's a lot lighter then it's going to cost more. If the sleeping bag is a lot lighter is it going to be as warm? only you can decide what is more important to you!
