Hi, how about the Mawddach Trail from Dolgellau to Barmouth a nice flat scenic trail along the Mawddach estuary. Harder route back is the Panorama Walk from Barmouth looking down on the estuaryfrom the north side and on to the gold mines near Bontddu then on to Dolgellau perhaps using the Toll Bridge to Penmaenpool. I need 2 days for round trip.

X94 is a good bus service from Wrexham where i am, direct to Barmouth via Bala and Dolgellau.

Ain't bus passes a wonderful thing

Tony

Yeah but you don't have to do it all in one go .

The South West Coast Path (SWCP) really is absolutely stunning. I love it - for my money, it is England's best LDP with incredibly varied scenery. It runs from Minehead in Somerset to Poole in Dorset and thus includes the whole coastline of Devon and Cornwall, a bit of Somerset and most of Dorset.

There is very good access to most of the route and public transport to much of it. The route is covered in detail on the excellent SWCP website.

Last year when I was walking the SWCP in north Cornwall I met a bloke who'd walked it all 630 miles of it. In fact he'd done it three times and was on his fourth trip! He did about ten-fifteen miles of the path each day, section by section, throughout the summer mostly using public transport for access.

If you like the sea nearby when you're walking, the SWCP is ideal.

Love walking the north cornwall coastal path, also  cycling the lanes.

Picture is near National Trust Doyden.

Plenty of reasonable priced campsites.

Cycled the Cornish Mines  Trail Last summer. Only 11 miles Portreath to Devoran, plenty of walkers on it as well.

One problem, my bus pass won't work in cornwall

I know it well . Your photo is looking west across Port Quinn Bay towards Com Head (top centre of photo) with The Rumps iron age fort visible in the top right corner.

The Mines Trail is called the 'Coast to Coast Trail' and follows the erstwhile Cornwall Mineral Tramways disused railway line(s). It links the north coast to Restronmguet Creek on the south coast and passes some outstanding industrial scenery. You can read more about it here. Well worth a visit IMO.

That is a shame. I thought bus passes were more or less universal?

True but it would be better if I did because its expensive to keep going back and forth between where I live in Liverpool and Cornwall. That might be one for when I retire/win the lottery. I do have some friends down in Pendeen area but I don't think they'd put up with me for that long! I do like coastal paths though because its a lot harder to get lost on them

I picked up a second hand copy of a guide to the Hadrian's Wall path today for only £3. It looks like quite a good route and at only a little over 80 miles could easily be done in a week. I've not really been up to that part of the country so it would make an interesting hike. The book's really good because it uses O/S maps throughout to guide you.

Scotland:

Southern upland way - from Portpatrick on the south-west coast of Scotland to Cockburnspath on the eastern seaboard. It offers superb and varied walking country, still undiscovered by many enthusiasts.

The daddy - West Highland way - Milngavie to Fort William

Is that the one on a corner on your right-hand side as you drive from Pityme towards Trebetherick?

I've often passed it and wondered what it's like and how much the pitch fees are. Please will you give us a report (either here or in the campsite review section)?

Re Trewiston Farm. Yes Scep thats the one. My cousin has been bringing his dinghy to sail the Camel Week for many years. I've joined them the last 6 years really enjoy the area.I usually arrive first, end of july and leave last after 4/5 weeks.

The site is quite large and has 3 fields for campers, the one you can see from the road which has electric, one for none electric tents and also a field for caravans staying the season. There are also a few static caravans.

2 toilet blocks and laundry, one block only 2 years old. Toilets and showers in good condition plenty of hot water and cleaned twice daily.

It's a working farm big machines around some times early A.M.

Good points Nice walks to Daymer Bay,Polzeath and Pityme (Arms)

I paid £16 per night for myself in a touring caravan with elec(sorry *****) which i'd loaned, previously i'd had a camper van.

This year i'll be a tenter, hopefully in a Hypercamp after reading good things about them on this forum.

Thanks very much Tony. There's only one UKCS review so your additional info is very handy.

I'm tempted to give Trewiston a try next time I'm in that part of Cornwall. The fact that it's a working farm is no deterrent - quite the opposite, in fact.

OK I have a plan of action now.

I've booked a long weekend off work between the 1st and 4th of April. I am thinking about hiking two different paths if practical. I'll start with the Maelor Trail and then go on to the South Cheshire Path. I still need to work out the specifics but these two seem to intersect at Grindley Brook so should be fairly easy to combine.

I've ordered the guidebook to the South Cheshire Path already but I need to try and get a copy of the Maelor Way guide. I've also emailed Wrexham Council to see if there's any way I can get a copy of the Maelor Way guide sent in the post.

millybee: I was hoping that you might be able to suggest the best way of getting to the start point of the Maelor Way? I live in South Liverpool but relations in Wirral so can easily get the train to Wrexham, but don't know the best route from there. Any advice you can give would be helpful.

This combination hike is a warm up because at the end of May I intend to hike along Hadrian's Wall Path, taking 6 days to cover the 84 miles. I'm planning to take more days than normal because there's plenty to see a short distance from the wall and also the terrain sounds a bit more challenging than what I'm used to.

I'm keeping the other routes in mind for the future though.

Family friends did that walk a couple of years ago and they too allowed six full days. Mind you, they had booked a package that included B&B accommodation and a service to 'ferry' their luggage from each overnight stop to the next leaving them relatively unemcumbered as they walked each day's segment.

I've day-walked several sections of the wall and it passes through spectacular scenery especially between Chesters Fort (near Humshaugh) and Greenhead. The going is generally pretty sound as far as I remember, the paths are well waymarked and on that section you're never too far from the B6318 road.

Good luck with that - enjoy.

I really enjoyed doing the isle of wight coastal path

Apart from every now and again the path disappears where it has slipped down the cliffs

Did a couple of random wild camps, lovely on top of a cliff, sunset coming down over the sea

granduca:

Thanks for the advice, I didn't realise Chirk was that close but that will make it much easier to start the walk since it can't be more than a mile or two away from Bronygarth.

I actually had that link already but every time I rang the number I kept getting an answer-phone message. I got through today though and ordered a copy for £2.50. By early next week then I should be able to start planning that trip.

Sceptical Camper:

I'll probably be camping along the way because its a lot cheaper. I generally don't take too much stuff with me and I've done trips of 125 miles (Anglesey Coastal Path) and 34 miles (Sandstone Trail) beforehand so it shouldn't be too bad. As always I'll take a good camera with me and post the photos here. With luck I won't drown it this time!

valbarley:

Friends of mine have recommended that path but I'm going to leave that for a while because it will be fairly expensive to get down there to begin with. I like coastal paths though, its much harder to get lost!

Well I hit a minor snag in plans for April. There aren't that many Campsites close to the Maelor Way and South Cheshire Path (except where they meet at Grindley Brook). I'm therefore hoping that each will have space available that weekend, but since I'm only taking a single berth tent I'm hoping it won't be a problem. Where possible though I'm going to ring or email each site just in case.

Unfortunately the third night I'll be spending in a travel lodge because there doesn't seem to be a campsite anywhere near the Nantwich/Crewe area. I don't mind that much though because I got it for £19 and I can have a nice relaxing night after a long walk that day of 20+ miles.
