That would be a pretty scary noise if you didn't know what it was (which I didn't but I do now, thanks).

Sharon, you're brilliant! That will be an experience to remember. I heard a stag roaring on the hillside last October during the night and that was amazing.

Hillbillie: "so to all you ladies (Heather) that think its 'crazy,mad etc' have a go,you never know you might just like "
I would love it! Somehow I haven't quite got round to wildcamping yet but may manage later in the year. It's the man in my life who wouldn't even consider camping, not even in a posh tent with all the comforts, let alone doing wild things in the woods!

YYYYEEEEEEEHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!

i have a friend who has given up his flat and wandered off int the wilds of scotland,he has been gone a few weeks now but he posts back memory cards from his camera to a friend and puts updates on fb and yt. he is planning to make a 100 year old small house ruin (no more than a pile of stones) in to his permanent home..pioneer style.
he will be hunting,fishing and foraging for the bulk of his food but will get certain supplies when he pops back down to town. i love the right to roam philosophy that scotland has,shame it cant be introduced in the rest of the country.

exactly right vangoman
i do wish people would turn the damn things off.
people seem to know more about some actor/actress life on the other side of the world than being able to identify the tree's they walk past every day.

On that theme...Having lived by a wood for 28yrs I have just purchased a book on trees....Walk under these things everyday and don't know one from another....Shame on me!!!

Not going all geeky on the subject...But would be nice to let my grandkids(when they come along) know what kind of tree they are climbing...Also handy to know what deadfalls from what tree are good for the fire....

Jelboy.

once you start learning about trees a whole new world opens up,they are surprisingly interesting on many levels.

as for what to burn here is an old woodsman's poem..hope it helps.

Beechwood fires are bright and clear
If the logs are kept a year;
Oaken logs burn steadily
If the wood be old and dry;
But ash dry or ash green
Makes a fire fit for a queen.

Logs of birchwood burn too fast,
There’s a fire that will not last;
Chestnut’s only good they say
If for long it’s laid away;
But ash new or ash old
Is fit for a queen with a crown of gold.

Poplar makes a bitter smoke
Fills your eyes and makes you choke;
It is by the Irish said
Hawthorn makes the sweetest bread;
But ash green or ash brown
Is fit for a queen with a golden crown

Elmwood burns with a churchyard mould,
E’en the very flames are cold;
Apple logs will fill your room
With an incense like perfume;
But ash wet or ash dry
For a queen to warm her slippers by.

I've always wanted to wild camp but never gotten around to it. That said I have a hope that one day I'll spend 2-3 days somewhere on the Apalachian Trail and wild camp there. I've wanted to do that ever since reading A Walk in the Woods.
