hi everyone!

My single Thermarest Prolite Reg 16109 weighs 460g including stuff sack but the lightest double camping mattress I could find was the Vango Adventure at a whopping 3800g! I need a lightweight double/semi double that will fit in my laser photon, any ideas?

I thought of just another thermarest but wouldn't they just slide around and come apart?

cheers

great idea, thanks! the kit to join two of them together see http://www.amazon.co.uk/THERMAREST-UNIVERSAL-COUPLE-KIT/dp/B00392XN1O - it weighs 40g + 2x single Thermarest Prolite = total 960g total for the double. Sounds good...the couple kit stops us sliding apart but I can't see how it would stop the mats sliding over eachother and becoming one thick mat!

However I can only find it online...searched Ellis Brigham & Cotswold Outdoors without success - anyone know where I can buy the Thermarest couple kit in London? I need it today!

According to the Terra Nova website, the inner of the Laser Photon is 74cm, if you exclude the triangle at the back. You wouldn't get that Vango mat in there would you?

Have I looked up the dimensions of the wrong tent?

You're right you wouldn't. In fact I doubt two Thermarest Prolite's would fit flat - the Laser Photon is a "1.5 man tent" (but then my girlfriend is half my weight so she's the .5!)

There's only one review on amazon.co.uk for the Thermarest Couple Kit and it's not good. I'm thinking we'll just buy one more Thermarest Prolite and see how we get on with two mats. I think the small size of the Laser Photon inner tent will do the same job as the Couple Kit in stopping the mats from separating. But there's still no solution to stop them overlapping.

A much better couple kit would involve a very lightweight material sheath partially covering two mats with a central division that would stop them both overlapping or separating. Probably similar material to those covers that turn a Thermarest into a seat. Is anyone working for Thermarest reading this thread?

It's ridiculous that Thermarest and competitors don't make double mattresses, surely one double is lighter than two singles?!

Hi, just browsing as I am not really a lightweight camper but I have been using a Thermarest couple kit for years with absolutely no problems about them moving, not even an inch! I can't imagine what problems others may have had. Just as good as a double and far more flexible if I only need to use one.

Aaah! Just looked at the Amazon review. Mine have no buckle and are sized to fit a particular width Thermarest (I have 50's and 60's). Just like a figure of 8 flat elastic band. Definitely recommend getting those if still available or maybe make them cheaply with wide flat elastic?

What about the Alpkit Wedge? 69cm wide? Still a bit heavy though at about 1kg.

We share a Exped Synmat DLX. It's quite cosy but just ok as long as I put a pile of clothes where my knee lands.

Our previous best alternative was a 'proper' single air bed - 3 feet wide like a single bed. I think amazon might sell them.

I don't know if this is feasable but in car camping people sometimes use a fitted sheet over the top of two SI mats to keep them together, or use a cheap (lightweight) double sleeping bag and pop the two mats inside but sleep on top of the whole arrangement.

Just got back from Southern Italy and yes the two Thermarest Prolite mattresses do fit snug in a Terra Nova Laser Photon tent and we did sleep quite comfortably. However they do often overlap or separate, even though the inner tent is so small a couple of mornings a mat was halfway up the side wall! I think we exhausted ourselves during the day and we're noth heavy sleepers so it didn't matter.

For anyone curious Puglia in Italy is gorgeous, the people are very welcoming and friendly and early June is more than hot enough!

My girlfriend cycled into a stone wall at speed and had three stitches in her head. Bless her cotton socks the next day she got back on her bike and rode up the hills again!

NitaMD: if you know where to get the figure of 8 couple kit please let me know.

Victoria: thanks for the tips but we're not car camping (this is the Backpacking and Lightweight Camping forum).

bluebottle: 'proper' air beds are too heavy. but the Exped Synmat DLX: Size: (l)193cm x (w)65cm, Thickness: 7cm, Packed Weight: 1160g/1.16kg is it really wide enough for two?

sanhozay: the Alpkit wedge is heavier than two Thermarest Prolites and is it wide enough for two people?

we still need a better solution for next time...

Hi dameunmate.

Sounds like you had a great time, lucky you. My OH hates camping unless he has his own loo!!! I did a google search on Thermarest couple kit and this was the first site that came up but I am sure there are others. The website also shows a picture of the loops in use. They come attched to a little bag into which they roll up when not in use to store neatly in the inner pocket of the Thermarest storage bag. Just make sure you get the kit that fits your width of mat. http://www.spacycles.co.uk/products.php?plid=m4b57s151p326

Good luck, NitaMD
