I am a historical re-enactor who likes to go around the country to battles. Sadly i can't drive and my kit is getting heavy. I really need advice on a light tent that can be used from April until October in Britian. It needs to fit me in (6'2) and a kit bag.
I think it depends on your price range and what weight limit you plan on. If you can afford on I've heard good things about the Wild Country Aspect tents, but at £75 for the single berth and £100 for the double berth they're a bit out of my price range. Their advantage is that they only weigh 1.75 and 2.2 KG respectively and have a fair bit of room.
I'd probably find the Alpha a little on the heavy side for single person but that would depend on how much hiking you have to do. Another alternative would be the Gelert Eiger which is usually around the same price but under 3kg in weight.
I do a fair bit when I go camping so bought a Pro-Action Hike Lite from Argos for £17 about a year ago and have had no complaints since. They don't have them any more but they turn up on Ebay every now and then.
Last year (2010) I bought a Coleman AviorX2 - 2 man back packing tent.
It has a high hydro head, is excellent in design, 1 door in the porch and 1 in the side which is great if you want to get in the tent without clambering over any geat you might be storing in the porch area.
I would recommend this tent as a lightweight roomy packpacking syle of tent
Probably in a different price bracket but I can't speak of Hilleberg tents highly enough - lighter than anything above but a lot more money. My pride and joy has room for 2 plus a porch and weighs only 2.5 kg (same as Coleman avior x2 but twice as much space). Also have a look at Tarptent from the US - very light and not so expensive.

Several of the members use a tarp for camping. Home made is very low cost, size what you will, and support just one pole at the front, or two if you prefer.
