This is going to be my second year at wild camping, and I've already learnt quite a bit thanks to forums and the kindness of people.

However, one thing I did learn last year was that you need a good sleeping bag. My original one came from Millets and it's really only a summer bag. I was looking at snugpak, but they can be quite heavy for good insulation. I saw that the Wenger bags are on offer at Amazon HERE I'm thinking of going for the Chasseral, but can't find any reviews on it?

Does anyone have any experience? Or should I buy, try it, and send it back if it doesn't do what it says on the tin?

sorry can't help you but the removable top layer looks interesting - 2 bags for the price of one

Yes it does, that's what I was thinking as I always sleep hot. When not in use the top sheet packs into itself to create a pillow.

I'm guessing no-one else has bought one so I may have to take the plunge. I'll have to set up the tent in the back garden and try the bag. If it gets too cold I can just come in to the house, and then I'll just send it back to Amazon.

If it's any good I'll post a review for others.

The deal looks good, but it's quite heavy for a 4*C comfort bag. That would be down to the extra zips and linings I suppose.

I tested this bag a couple of weeks ago in the back garden. I pitched my Epsilon 3 and took the plunge. The gear I used was as follows:

Coleman Epsilon 3 Tent
Gelert Extreme lite Mat
Helly Hansen long sleeved base layer
Pillow from the house
Wenger Chasseral Sleeping bag

Getting into the bag and comfortable was a little effort, but not having very much experience with this type of bag I can only assume this is normal. The baffle works well and there was plenty of room for movement inside the bag (and I'm not small). The bag holds heat very well, the outside temp reached -2c in the night and I was very snug. I did wake a number of times, but I think that was because of noises outside more than anything. I reckon I would have been fine in temps down to -5 with no problems.

My worry initially was the weight, but it fits nicely in the bottom compartment of my bag, and I would rather carry an extra 500g and get a good nights rest.

All in all I think this bag is a bargain, especially as it's now around £55. You never know what the weather brings in this country so I will always take the top cover with me and remove it if it's too warm. I think that this versatility is it's main selling point, and I really like it.

Fingers crossed, I shouldn't need to buy another bag for years to come yet, and I'll be sticking with this one.

I read somewhere a silk liner for sleeping bags helps with additional warmth. It may be worth checking out.

Silk is brilliant for the weight and size.

There's nothing of it but it traps warm air close to your skin and adds more warmth than say cotton. Lovely stuff and available on eBay for reasonable prices.

i looked at the wenger tent on amazon, seemed a really good price (£69.95 i think) But then the reviews slated it! (unstable unless totally guyed all the time etc)

was pretty as well...
