been thinking has anybody got any ideas about what can be used instead of the mallet,  as a backpacker trying to think of other methods than adding to my extending list, so any ideas please,   or is it must have and must carry all times

I never use a mallet when I'm using a small tent and small pegs. Just push them in.

If the ground is too hard and you are on a campsite, you could always borrow one. If you are wild camping you just chose the wrong pitch spot. ;)

Peggy Pegs have taken over from Wurmi Pegs and are a screw in tent peg.

http://www.peggypeg.co.uk/

Mostly used by caravanners for their awnings and put into and out of the ground by rechargeable drills, you can also screw them in by hand using a small lightweight hand tool.

Their pegs come in 2 sizes and we found that the 8" ones held the guy lines of our tunnel tent while the 4" or 5" ones were idea for around the base.

These pegs are made of a hard plastic and therefore quite lightweight.

Well back in the day,

Never carried one,  always asked nearest camper, and god bless em' they always obliged or more often offered

But mostly ground was soft enough to push or stand on them to get them in.

You see there are benefits to living in the wet and windy north

Well if wild camping, that probably rules out the plug in and screw in method due to the weight of the drill and somewhere to recharge it, and also borrowing from a friendly neighbour as the nearest one is probably miles away, so its either belt them in with a sturdy shoe (I have often used my wooden scholl type clogs for this, or hubbys steel toecap of his hiking boots) or look for a large rock and use that, or if you have also forgotten the pegs, pitch near enough to a bush or fence to tie the main guy ropes to that, and go in search of some large stones to use to anchor down the sides, not ideal, but better than nothing....

Unless you can mange to get to the local pub, and tell your tale of woe to the landlord, whilst promising to consume one of his rather expensive meals, and several pints of his nectar, In exchange for the loan of a hammer, and just maybe even better still, for a patch of grass in his garden on which you could pitch your tent and consume even more of his nectar giving him some well earned profits for the loan!

Hi Gedi010, Controry to the comments <<< Well if wild camping, that probably rules out the plug in and screw in method due to the weight of the drill  >>>

The "screw in method" is exactly what you would want in a wildcamping situation.
I have wildcamped in Scotland for over 50 years, starting in the Cairngorm Mountains while snow & ice climbing and, over the years going from tents to other forms of camping units.

I have in that time used just about every form of tent peg ever invented and without a doubt, the hard plastic screw in type are by far the strongest holding, easily carried and most versitile ever invented.

Using the hand tool to screw them in and out, you do not need to scrabble around looking for a suitable stone to use as a mallet nor struggle to pull pegs out of hard ground.

These days we are a little long in the tooth for ice climbing and we have just bought ourselves a folding camper, but I still have our trusty screw in pegs and yes, I also still have the hand tool for them although we have just invested in a drill.

The hard plastic screw in pegs with their hand tool are not cheap, but they do the job and they will last a lifetime.

I think a rock or large stone is the usual solution but if the ground is soft enough just press them in with your foot as several replies recommend.

LobeyDosser, is there much of a weight penalty with the screww-in pegs and hand tool?

Take your walking boot off. Hold the toe end in your hand and hit the peg in with the heel.

A mallet will only break a lightweight peg! I use a small piece of wood in the palm of my hand for pushing a peg into hard ground. It has a slit cut in it so that I can screw the peg if necessary. For stony ground a hole can be pre-drilled with a screwdriver - an old one is easier to carry than a mallet!

I tried pushing the pegs in on my last camping trip and it worked perfectly well. It was also easier to extract them, so in future I'll save space and weight by only taking an extractor with me.
