In this country it is unlikely that you will be out of reach of clean water for very long. In a UK wilderness area we look for a small stream, preferably rocky, and not big enough for sheep to drown in. We've never suffered any ill effects from drinking untreated water. Abroad, we always buy our drinking water in sealed bottles, usually available in even the remotest areas.
About showering - take a pack of baby wipes for a babywipe bath, and then use a proper shower when you can - CalMac ferries/terminals, railway stations, some Scottish tourist info centres eg at Glenfinnan, municipal swimming baths, the occasional night in a hostel or B&B to do your clothes washing as well, etc. If you are feeling particularly robust, a quick dip in a lochan or burn, or the sea, but if you use soap make sure its eco-friendly.
