I think decent filters are pretty expensive, especially for occasional use. Can you tell me how you clean up your water? I think I need one vessel for dirty incoming water so sediment can settle and then another to transfer it into for chlorine treatment? Then I could transfer it to a hydration pouch? Or do you treat directly in what you intend to drink from?

Does anyone bother with showering and if so, how clean is your water? I doubt those shower bags will warm up much in Scotland.

{I should probably have made my previous thread broader in scope but I don't want to muddle topics for future searchers so I started this separate one).

Edit: This looks promising. If I hang it up, sediment could fall to the bottom and water be drained at the tap without disturbing it?

Could you perhaps give more information on where you are going to be getting water from? Specifically are you thinking of lowland backpacking or above farm intake walls? You mention showers - are you thinking of extended trips on long-distance paths?

Most of the water I collect is from a running source and has no visible sediment. On occasion I have used untreated water with no ill effects and I know of people who never use any treatment, just being careful on their sources of water.

Personally I use a Travel Tap, which gives extra peace of mind and a bit more flexibility on collection. Filters out cysts, deals with bacteria, viruses and metals. Tastes good too.

Boiling is another option if you can carry the fuel but boiling all your water would be a chore.

This link takes you to probably the best information available on purifying drinking water. Hope it helps!

In this country it is unlikely that you will be out of reach of clean water for very long. In a UK wilderness area we look for a small stream, preferably rocky, and not big enough for sheep to drown in. We've never suffered any ill effects from drinking untreated water.  Abroad, we always buy our drinking water in sealed bottles, usually available in even the remotest areas.

About showering - take a pack of baby wipes for a babywipe bath, and then use a proper shower when you can - CalMac ferries/terminals, railway stations, some Scottish tourist info centres eg at Glenfinnan, municipal swimming baths, the occasional night in a hostel or B&B to do your clothes washing as well, etc. If you are feeling particularly robust, a quick dip in a lochan or burn, or the sea, but if you use soap make sure its eco-friendly.

Sean, in answer to your first question, read this OM thread then look at the products on the Drinksafe website.

In answer to your second question, when my generation were kids the vast majority of people had a bath - showers were extremely uncommon in houses back then - once, perhaps twice, a week. That's what the expression 'bath night' refers to. In between we just washed.

Showering every single day is a modern (American-influenced) phenomenon.

I presume you refer to showering out in the wilds while on a two or three day wild-camping trip? Er, why would you - or anyone - want to do that? I suppose if you were in the wilderness for a week in hot weather and didn't even wash yourself you might get fed up with your own smell.
