Morning campers!
I need to find a light, small bag for backpacking as my usual bag is both bulky and heavy. I really prefer a square cut bag rather than the mummy style.
Does one like this exist?
Class discuss.
Thanks , Tackhead.

Er.................. define 'light'?
North Face Dolomite tips ticks all the boxes but tips the scales at 1100gms. Is that light enough?

Tackhead, I had the same problem a week or so ago. I am aquiring backpacking gear and didn't want to spend a fortune incase I am not too keen on going alone!
Are you using it next season too or just for summer?
I went on Tesco Direct to see if they had anything after checking the usual online outlets and found this:
'Ultra light mummy sleeping bag' their own make for £19.50. It is 3 season and It has goose down filling too and weighs 916g with stuff sac! I ordered one straight away and used a clubcard voucher against it which brought it down to £17.00!! I have just checked their website and it's gone up to £25.97!! Still a bargain though imho.
I hope to be using it very soon and continue to use it well into autumn!
I wasn't after a mummy style either but the bottom end isn't as narrow as some mummy's Iv'e tried, so I'm chuffed with my purchase!
Hope this helps!

It is difficult to offer much advice without a better idea of what you are after.
What weight range are you looking for (under 2KG, under 1.5KG, under a kilo)?
How important is packed size (what capacity rucksack do you use)?
What usage do you envisage (summer only, autumn and spring, winter, sub-zero)?
Do you 'sleep hot' or do you feel the cold?
What is your budget (sleeping bag prices range from four quid to over four hundred)?
Comfort is very important of course but if you opt for envelope (square) over mummy you will probably pay a penalty in weight and warmth.

I have the Tesco down bag and have been impressed with the warmth to weight for the price, paid 19gbp in store when the Tesco on line site had them at 30 something

I have one too. Decent bag. Light and packs small. Used it spring/autumn and no reason to doubt the 3*C comfort temperature. Only downside, if you'll pardon the pun, is the leakage of down.

I have the Micro Lite Tesco bag and have had no problems with it even on trips in April, although I do use a liner with it and bring along thermal socks and hat just in case.

Ooooh it's nice to see Ive got a popular sleeping bag!
I was planning on using a liner with it too so I can increase the warmth if need be, on autumn trips.
Sanhozay, I too was slightly surprised at the lack of 'down' at the top end of the bag. It seemed to stay at the bottom even when aired. Not tried it yet so can't say if it bothers me.
PH, I looked at the 'micro lite' bag in Tesco and thought it was a little too 'micro' for my liking...perfect for balmy summer night's though!

That's an incredible price for a down filled bag!!
As sanhozay says, you must avoid getting it wet ,as then the down will clump together and will lose its insulating properties- this is the one disadvantage of down. Manmade insulation material does not lose all its "lofting" ability when wet so the bag will still give you some warmth.

Thanks for the tips Richard & Foggers!! I didn't realise down took alot of looking after!! I will strive to keep it as dry as possible! Storing it in a pillow case is a great idea, thanks.
Tackhead, did you get sorted??

Hello Tackhead.
My bag is a Vango Nightstar 450 which they promise is a four season. So far, I've never been able to sleep in it zipped up as it gets too hot for me. Can't wait to test it when it's winter time. As for a light ( I use a fire steel, just in case it's what you meant! ) I've got a Silverpoint wind up lantern, which is 5.5 inches tall & 1.5 inches wide. It all works for me, but as already been said it's really down to the individule.
