Hi everybody as the title going to walk from Edale to Crowden in November time.

Just need some help on getting back from Crowden back to Edale to pick up the car. Going to stay over night at Crowden then make our way back 1st thing.

I will be doing this with myself and the wife. Trying to put a list together what i need, I have a good idea of what i need to take and what i have got to start to get. I will be carrying at least 75/85% of the equipment on the walk myself.

your help and points would be most appreciated

Michael

I don't really know that area to be honest. The best advice I could give you probably already know. Equipment wise start with the absolute essentials such as waterproofs, warm weather gear, map/guidebook etc and work from there. It doesn't look like the kind of route where you can buy food or drink along the way, so make sure you carry plenty of both just in case. Given the kind of terrain you'll be crossing it would be wise to take regular breaks too, usually every hour or so but more often if necessary.

Oh and take a camera and post the photos here!

I may be wrong but were you thinking of camping at Crowdon Cc campsite . I believe it's only open march to October .
I have no idea how much experience you have of either winter walking or backpacking ? I say this as Edale to Crowden can be a really pleasant walk or one that can be come a nightmare . Navigational skills are a must in winter on the Kinder Plateau .
I'm not trying to put you of but be sure of your abilties .

crowden campsite is very remote.  nearest pub is 5 miles away. nearest train station is possibly glossop which if it is you would have to take train to manchester then to edale

hi all big thanks for the info.

i did look on the website about the campsite and it does close October time.

we have been to Edale quite a few times in the winter but not to walk this far from Edale its self. i do have what i would class as good Navigational skills and survival skills. but good in sometimes dont cut it.

I did look at buses and trains to get back to Edale. This looks more harder than the walk lol.

if anybody has more info they help with it would be appreciated

thanks again

Are you just looking to do a winter backpack ? Would it be first time winter backpacking ? Because Grindleford to Edale or Hathersage to Edale could be better well connected for both train and bus.

Yes wanted to do the winter backpack. All the times that we have been to Edale its aways been in winter, and Edale in winter to me is at its best even when its covered in snow.

Been looking at my map and looking at other placers to go even if we started at Edale and finished back at Edale. I do want to go up to kinder scout then make our way back from but not the same route.

I agree with you Edale in winter is beautifull . You could do Edale to Hayfields . Up Grindsbrook then across to Kinder downfall then Hayfields . Return via Jacobs Ladder Barber Booth .
My Dad use to take me and my brother up on to Kinder in winter as kinda extrem navigation training . We even did an ice climb on the downfall .
Just to add I've started a thread New year meet either at Edale or Great langdale in the lakes
Meet up North

mickjq. .

The advice Robnchar gave you for the Edale to Hayfield . Is a great route ,especially two ways to tackle Kinder.

I have camped In and around Edale since the sixties . An did lots of hike's days out on the hills and trails . And this is one of my favourites .

I lived In Glossop and used to hike back a lot via Edale /Hayfield .

Happy Days ..

"Go for It" Its brilliant .

Hopefully others on the forum will give you better advice than me . .

But now we are In the Autumn Season . And can get very cold in the rural Peak District .

I would suggest you look at a 3/4 season Down Sleeping bags . Lightweight , Due to the load you will be Backpacking with . Around a 1 Kg or less , Poss Mummy style : If you dont mind the restriction . As for price . Tesco's were selling Micro S/B's around £30. but If you look at Field and Trek .For Examples . You will see good quality bags . But at a price !!!!.

Decathalon sell S/B bags at reasonable prices also Go Outdoors . And I'm sure they will be selling them cheaper now . The Camping Season . (" Is supposably over" ).

I hope this helps .

Cheers
