On yet another weight shaving attempt - want to go lighter than the 1.3kg I currently am with the tent. But not cuben - I'm not convinced it's robust enough and not a fan of Terra Nova.

What would folk here recommend sub kilo and under £400?

Don't know about lighter tents.
Semi tongue in cheek as I don't know your circumstances. You want to spend £400 to save carrying 400gm? That's about the weight of a tin of fizzy pop and £1=1gm.

What other kit do you carry that you could trim? How much water/food do you carry how heavy is your bergan/rucksack when its empty?

Failing that use it on gym membership and get fitter to carry the extra weight.

Vaude Power lizard? Total weight just under 1kg. Price just over £300.
Isn't mentioned on this site under tent reviews but backpackinglight.co.uk gives it a great write up (sorry if I'm not supposed to mention other people's websites)

For me I'm looking at the Luxe Outdoor Mini Peak II (again not mentioned here on the tent reviews) but too heavy for your purposes.

Vaude are a good quality make, so even though its not mentioned on this site's reviews, I wouldn't be put off by that. I do agree that its a lot of money to spend to save a bit of weight, but if that's your thing and you have the money then go for it.

I have a virtually new power lizard if you're interested. I'm looking to pare down my gear a bit so this is surplus although I'm still havering. Incredible tent at an incredible weight with high quality workmanship. I own 5 other lightweight vaudes and they are virtually foolproof.

Simply mental money IMHO....

I paid the huge sum of £20 for my Pro Action Hike Lite...OK I can hear the sneers from here, BUT it does the job, has NEVER let water in, is a doddle to pitch and has ample room for me and all my camping kit + four pedal cycle panniers if I use the bike.

At 2.1 Kgs its a tad over your preferred weight but as already stated why spend SO MUCH to save a few gram

So laugh if you must but that's me sorted and I still have £380 in the bank !!

Graham..the Pro Action Hike Lite or Tiger Paws I think it was also called is a great wee tent. I had one when they first came on the market, my son ended up using it as he backpacked more than I did by then.
I cannot think of a better deal for the money and the reviews from backpackers and hikers is excellent..

Thanks for all your replies. I am very happy with my Tarptent Scarp1 at 1.3kg but was just curious what else might be about. I previously had an Akto and am a big Hilleberg fan keeping my Nallo2 GT for non-hiking trips.

For anyone wondering why weight is such as issue, I do hike off to some remote parts. Carrying tent, sleeping kit, stove, waterproofs etc etc and enough food for at least a few days can add up. A kilo off a tent weight means more food for no weight penalty.

As for Terra Nova - I borrowed a Laser once and couldn't get the thing taut. Too much night flapping in not so terrible a wind - it did stay up to its credit. Just steered elsewhere but they are popular I know.

I started out with a ProAction myself which was fine at first but when those zips foul up or a seam goes in a Cape Wrath storm you might see them differently. (Luckily both happened to me in tranquil Surrey.) Got to have a reliable tent above all else - I'll pay for that peace of mind.. and I have..plenty!

The Akto would get my vote if it was less prone to condensation. The door top vent is too low and really is not up to the job. After a couple of days my gear starts to get damp precluding longer tours unless there is some wind to dry it out over night. The other issue for me is the door brail up that never fails to let slide.

I know other swear by them but sometimes I swear at mine

I look at a tent as my first line of defense. Trust is the most important thing.
My summer tent is an old Coleman Cobra 2. 1.5 Kg. I open the 2 doors using my trekking poles to make awnings. This makes for great ventilation, and protection from a summer midnight rain.
In the winter its a Terra Nova Duolite. 2.5 Kg. Its the bomb against wind and heavy rains.
I have tried to go lighter with other tents, but they all failed me in one way or the other. I need the peace of mine that the tent I'm using will do what I need it to do. And will not fail me. Please note that both these tents are 2 persons. I like my room too. So if I have to carry more weight so be it. For me it's about safety.

Would be fascinated to hear a user opinion of the new Vango Blade 100 (£90, 1.72kg) and Apex 200 (£200, 1.72kg) models. Just a feather heavier than the Akto (doubt if they are as bullet proof though!)

I haven't seen any reviews of this yet as I'm not sure if it's out yet but the new Nordisk Telemark 2 (or 1 if you prefer), looks pretty good to me. Has the looks of an Akto, comes in 880g version with carbon poles and a 950g version with aluminium poles.
