Many moons ago when our gracious Queen celebrated her first jubilee and Mr F was a fresh faced teenager still blessed with full thatch he and and a group of like minded friends decided to have an adventure. We rented some fibreglass moulds and spent a couple of happy weekends building our own kayaks which we then used to go on weekend camping trips on various rivers and canals around us. The power of those rose tinted fog laden memory goggles is so strong that we're thinking of doing it again only this time we want to build Canadian canoes. Does anyone still do this sort of thing or have any recent experience? (Other than Griff, Rory and Dara of course, but they cheated, they didn't build their own!) We're thinking we can probably get away with camping on the banks on the Norfolk Broads but what's the rest of the country like now?

Spent a week canoeing and wild camping at Loch Lomond about 6 years ago with my son. I was in my mid fifties at that time and loved it.
You can reach places only accessable by boat.

We had a 16ft Canadian canoe and already had all our camping gear.

I had kayaked for some years earlier but have to say we had a few trips in the Canadian canoe and really enjoyed our time.

Scotland has an abundance of river and lochs which are ideal for canoeing and wild camping is allowed.
Obviously the usual common sense applies when wild camping.
Loch Lomond has for example restricted wild camping, you are unable to wild camp on the east side of the loch due to morons spoiling it for normal folk.

Just as an aside..I am also a member of the Scottish Youth Hostel Association and on our trip to Loch Lomond we stayed at the Rowardennan Youth Hostel the night before our trip.Its on the East side of the loch, the road actually ends there for motor vehicles.

The warden allowed us to leave our car in the carpark and after our week we stayed the last night in the hostel.

It can be a problem finding somewhere safe to leave the car if you are away for more than a day. If nearer home its easier to get someone to drop you off and come back for you, if you would rather not leave the car.
