I really like the idea of sleeping in a hammock under a tarp...But think I would really need to pick my time for doing it really carefully as like in the warmer months!!

Got a couple of DD tarps that I use with the tent or over the firepit and am very impressed with the quality of them...Though I have nothing to compare them with.....

to be honest jelboy i don't think i was any colder the hammock than i would have been in the tent.

the dd tarps you have are about as good as you can get so any comparison will come up short

I'll mull the hammock option over for a few weeks Hillbillie got a few things coming up that are going to eat into the pennies these next 2-3 months....

The chance to try before you buy should be an option for tents and hammocks....I know someone who has one...Might ask him to loan me it for a weekend when it warms up...

I conclude with mikemorrow - a good super-sized (length & Width) Foam Mat slipped in-between the bottom layers give some great protection - as you sink into it. You appear to have exactly the same set-up as myself, I too didn't have the pennies to splash out on a 'Snugpack Underquilt' & the weight/bulk concerned me a little, so I got this http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00639PKP2/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
for £15 (thinnest version). Does the job - keeps the buttocks warm!

I took the plunge and got a tw hammocks green hornet!!!
I've set it up to try it out but as yet haven't slept in it.......It seems well made and designed and its really comfortable so far.........
I'm not sure what to do about keeping warm..........I've got a sim to try, and I'm sure I've got an old sleeping bag I could adapt if that doesn't work!!!
I just need an opportunity to try it out now.......

I thought 'mikemorrow' had the TW Hornet (the DD looks very similar) cos that's what I have too ! With Sargasso Tarp. I find that self-inflating Foam Mat I described earlier (£15) does a fine job. A 'little' bulky, but can't be any more cumbersome than an 'expensive' Underquilt? For my Hammock Top Quilt I got a cheepo one from an auction site & simply cut and stitched most of the back length-wise (leaving a 'foot-well'), just as a 'Shop Bought' one would have been designed.

Have a good look around On-Line you will find some accommodating Sites; You don't have to resort to 'Stealth Camping' - At least not all the time! :)

I'm still waiting for an opportunity to try mine out overnight!!!
I want to do some long distance trails this year as a challenge and I'm tempted to do a few overnighters with the hammock........but then again, I do seem to have a lot of "plans" that never quite happen

Right, a little update........
I've made a stand (courtesy of the hammock forum!) and decided to try my hammock out in the garden..........
Well I'm happy to say its so comfortable I've been in it over a month now!!!!!
My normal sore back has improved since hanging and not being in my bed, and one of my cats spends most of the night led on me in it as well!!!
My wife enjoys the extra room in the bed and not having to listen to me snoring as well.........
It still seems strange led in it under a tarp when it's pouring down, but so far I've been totally dry!!!
I'm using a sim between the layers and an ex army sleeping bag. It's a bit of an art getting in the bag but practise makes perfect.....

am so glad it is doing you good as well
the tarp will keep you dry and if your thinking of staying out there maybe an under-blanket could be the next step..far cozier than a bag inside...just have a blanket over you.
well if you ever fancy going to a 'bushcraft meet' just give me a shout they are always going on.
am going to one in lestershire at the end of the month.
you could always have a look at my blog slightlywildish.tk i ave put up an article about th tarp and will be doing one about the hammock soon

The wilderness gathering isn't far away from me, I've been for the day but never stayed over.

I really like the idea of a bushcraft meet, but I work such stupid shifts its difficult to balance family and leisure time, hopefully one day I'll be able to join you!!!
