Hi there

I'm thinking about wild camping in the Argyll area of Scotland, around about Inverary with my husband and 3 kids. I was wondering if any of you members have any experience of this and if so would you be able to give me some advice please. Thank you

Regards

Ags

Hi Ags..
And welcome to ukcs...

Don't know if I am going to be much help to you re the wild camping in the Inverary area...

1) I don't wild camp
2) Not too sure re law on such
3)I usually use the sites on the Argyll peninsula further down between Tarbet and Campbelltown ....

BUT!!....In my wanderings down that way I have seen a fair few tents pitched on or near beaches nowhere near a site...Have had groups of lads pass me while out on a walk obviously heading for some remote bit of shoreline to pitch....So I would say some folk are doing wild camping in the area..and most likely around the Inverary area too..

I do know there are a few laybyes up and down the loch(Both sides) with access to beaches or shoreline woods far enough away from houses etc where if you were discreet you could probably pitch up for a night...

Sorry not much info on the actual process/legality of wild camping in the area...but hope my observations on what others are doing helps....

Jelboy.

Hi Mike and Jelboy

Thanks for the replies. We're not backpacking, taking the car. So used to camping at proper sites with facilities. There used to be camping at Ardgarten Forest holidays not far from Inverary but not now.

Last time we were in Scotland walking in a forest we arrived back at the car at about 5.30 there was a family with several children carrying loads of stuff into the forest to camp. There are some areas with restrictions but as far as I am aware in most places it is fine. I was a bit jealous that they were just able to wander into the forest and find a sport to pitch their tent. The kids were very excited

Sorry agshugs...I thought you were talking about wild camping in the woods/beach/shoreline....

Again I can't speak for the Inverary area...But there are plenty of beach side campsites on the west coast of the Argyll peninsula between Tarbet and Campbeltown where you can camp right on the beach and get that "wild camping" feeling but with a few facilities thrown in....Use the campsite search facility(At the top of this page) and type in Argyll....This will bring you to campsites like Port Ban...Kilegruer.. Point Sands...And Muasedale...

I have stayed on the last one the past 3yrs...and can reccommend it...15 houses 1 campsite(10 pitches) 1 general store...No entertainment except a pool table and TT table in the barn...Seals and wildlife to watch from the beach...And glorious sunsets to enjoy(weather permitting)....

Hope this helps...

Jelboy.

Hi, new member here.

I would recommend the campsite at Lochgilphead. Good base for trips to Dunadd fort, Kilmartin Glen, Inveraray, Tarbet, Oban.
