Morning folks. I am looking for some suggestions for a lightweight tent. Our eldest son has just been moved up from Scouts to Explorers and they will be doing lots of hikes/overnight camps. He will also be starting his bronze Duke of Edinburgh award next year so he needs a tent thats sturdy, quick pitching and that has a bit of space inside for gear/getting changed.
The vango lightweight range all look good but wondered if there were any other recommendations. Thanks

The Vango Tempest 200 is a good little tent, it might even be one that is recommended by the D of E.
(two poles). Front entrance and small porch.
You can also pick up Wild Country Zephyros 1 or 2 (single pole with a small pole each end) quite reasonable and its the lighter of the two.Side entrance with small side area.
I have owned both and they are good little tents and can be bought on Ebay maybe used once for a few quid less than new..
Edit..Also Vango Helix similar to the Tempest and the Vango Zenith which is similar in style to the Zephyros.

I would say a decent bivvy bag/shelter rather than a tent for single overnighters.
When hiking for pleasure, you tend to camp out and take your time, not minding the extra weight a tent gives, however when trekking and doing challenges where all you need is a shelter for a quick over-night stop off, a bivvy shelter is a lot lighter and is probably the best.
It all depends upon the type of activities your son will be doing.

Thanks VM...... The Tempest really seems to be the ideal tent for our laddies needs. I'm presuming its easy and quick enough to pitch?
Do you think you will manage a wee visit to Gimme later on this month to see us looneys?

i agree with the tempest which i have. krazy camper did you post the same question on a fb group ???? i answered on that too!
Thanks lady cake. Yes, it was me that posted on Facebook too. He has a hike next weekend so need to get the tent ASAP, hence needing quick recommendations. Was it yourself that posted back with lots of useful information on the tempest? The pics on your FB page were most helpful

Bivvy shelters are probably the best as they do not suffer from condensation like some of the bags.
Thanks Whimp. A bivvy bag and shelter is a great idea however I think his Explorer leader would have kittens if he rolled up with that instead of a tent.
Will bear it in mind though for non Explorer hikes!

I have a Wild Country Zephyros 3 very quick to pitch and useful gear storage on three sides of the inner, I'd imagine the 1 or 2 would be even quicker to erect and very light
------------- Still trying to get the packing right.

Hi Krazy..Its a two pole tent, larger hoop to the front which gives a bit more headroom and smaller hoop to the rear. It is an easy tent to erect and it will last your son for years.
Hope to make it this time. Having mixed days health wise since May. They can't get this chest infection and this other bug (Mycobacterium) cleared from my lungs and been on antibiotics since May and not helping! Its linked to TB but I have not developed TB..initially had to stay away from everyone until confirmed I was not contageous.
Had to cancel my 2nd cataract op due to coughing all the time and if I don't get it done soon I will need a Labrador dug!
So apart from that I am a picture of health and selling lucky white heather (for those that remember the Rikki Fulton sketch)
Fingers crossed and will post nearer the time, only 24 sleeps

Thanks for those suggestions folks. I have just bought the Vango Tempest 200. Managed to get it for £90 with delivery included in price so I'm happy with that! I may even get a wee shot of it when he's not using it!!
